How gruesome is it? Really want to watch it but I really don't like gratuitous violence

Sorry love a horror film but really hated this film. Poor storyline and the ending was just awful.

Livsy · 13/01/2021 09:45

I loved that movie, some of the scenes were weird or kinda sick but i really enjoyed it. I did not expect it to be soo good.

emmalynn · 26/01/2021 15:16

It took quite a while to get interesting IMO. From what I remember it doesn't start getting "horror movie" like until about an hour in at the cliff scene?
It's definitely eerie though and I like how bright and colourful everything is, not your typical horror.

LightAsTheBreeze · 06/07/2021 20:12

This appeared on Netflix this week, I have never seen it, it is good though, nothing to horrible has happened yet.

LightAsTheBreeze · 06/07/2021 22:31

Oh my word, what did I just watch, it was good though, in the chanting bits it all went a bit Handmaids tale when they were clinging on to each other and wailing

Echobelly · 06/07/2021 22:34

I dislike horror generally (I hate scares and disturbing images) but I did like Midsommar and want to see it - I think weirdly it's a film that can work for non-horror people. Maybe it's the way it's in daylight makes it not so bad, and also that it's psychologically interesting and beautifully shot.

Immunetypegoblin · 06/07/2021 22:37

I loved it and watched it in full again the next day because I couldn't get it out of my head... I sympathised with Dani very strongly and completely understood her stance at the end. Not sure what that says about me though!

cheezy · 06/07/2021 22:44

It freaked the hell out of me, and I enjoy and good horror film. Makes me shudder to remember it.
I thought it got ridiculous towards the end though, quite hammy.
But the scenes on the cliff Shock

cheezy · 06/07/2021 22:45

My biggest disappointment was that it was billed as the next Wickerman, which is my all-time favourite film, and it didn't come close!

rabbitwoman · 06/07/2021 22:52

Horror films these days just aren't very horrific. I watched Spiral and the latest Conjuring film a few weeks ago and it seems films just want to be gorey and shocking rather than truly frightening.

Nothing comes close to The Exorcist, The Omen or the Shining for true horror, I am always looking for one.....

But I really enjoyed Midsomer, most of all it was the anticipation that something awful was going to happen.

And another film, remarkable for making me feel very unsettled and anxious all the way through, was Mother. Thought about that for days.

Yutes · 07/07/2021 13:55

I didn’t enjoy it and felt watching it was a waste of time. I think Ari Aster films - you either love them or hate them. I hated Hereditary as well

CharlieWorkCharlieSad · 07/07/2021 13:57

@MaMaLa321

sorry not watched it. Was all set to until I read the review where it describes how people were thrown off a cliff and finished off with hammers. I mean, what! Surely no film can be good enough to make it worth sitting through that?
They don't get thrown off...!!

It's a great film. I've watched it twice now. It's better the 2nd time around too.

Very intense and makes you think long and hard afterwards.

Either you’re misremembering the review or the person writing it hasn’t seen the film. That is not only hugely simplified but also not what actually happens!

The violence isn’t gratuitous by my definition of the word, but it is gory in places. I thought it was excellent, I’d like to watch it again.

Best new horror I've seen in a while is Us

I liked the twist in Us (and Lupita Nyong’o was great) but I couldn’t get over all of the plot holes Confused It reminded me a bit of Gone Girl, I liked it until I started thinking about it!

CharlieWorkCharlieSad · 07/07/2021 14:14

There are a few plot holes in Midsommar but Its good enough to not care too much!

The best "horror " I've seen in a while and partly because there are lots of nods to horrors of old, was Us. I also loved Get Out by the same director. I think he's supposed to be doing a reboot of Amityville Horror which I'd love as it's hands down one of the most frightening books I've ever read.

I think Back Mirror is excellent with fine very disturbing episodes which stay with you for a while after.

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 07/07/2021 14:24

Ha! Just read back and see I've already said the same thing Grin I'm a knobber.

As you were folks.

HumphreysCorner · 07/07/2021 20:57

I've just started watching this because of this thread. Got as far as the hammer moment but going to try again tomorrow.

I was intrigued by this when it first came out so I was pleased when it appeared on Netflix.

To me, it didn't feel.like a horror film because of the bright, almost psychedelic cinematography but I certainly found it psychologically disturbing.

It was gory in few places but the scene that made me switch tabs was the drugged up sex scene.

Last 20 minutes or so was just WTF moments when you realise the fate of the missing tourists.

Soubriquet · 08/07/2021 16:26

Finally got round to watching this and I’ve heard so many reviews on it

It’s slow to start but damn…it’s gory. I enjoyed it but I think it’s one of those you need to read spoilers on to fully understand everything.

HumphreysCorner · 08/07/2021 17:29

I've watched it now and quite liked it. I take it she was staying to be part of the commune.

Going to watch Us next.

Snooks1971 · 08/07/2021 17:35

Watched this today and it’s the best thing I’ve seen on Netflix for ages (of the horror genre I mean).

xsquared · 08/07/2021 19:16

I think Pelle had manipulated them all and Dani was already targeted to be May Queen. Note when they arrived she was greeted with "Welcome home". Pelle was also commented on having good perception or judgement of bringing outsiders by one of the elders.
Snooks1971 · 08/07/2021 19:51

@xsquared yes I agree, and also his brother Ingemar had been tasked with finding ‘fresh meat’ too, he brought Londoners Simon and Connie but they obviously didn’t pass the cliff test!

So Christian was targeted with impregnating the red haired girl (then sacrificed). Mark was obviously a dick. Josh wanted to write about them and perhaps expose their secrets and so he was also sacrificed (disposed of).

They needed new blood because they only did in-breeding/incest to create new people to rewrite their scripture equivalent??

xsquared · 09/07/2021 15:48

Yes, they were definitely not going anywhere! @Snooks1971.

I watched Us last night after suggests here so I'll start a new thread on that.
