If they remade the Harry Potter films today, who would you cast?

Just reflecting on how many iconic character actors were in the films, and who would be cast now?

I would have had the little girl from Outnumbered as Hermione if it were a few years ago.

I'd also love to have seen Sophie Turner play Ginny Weasley.

Snape will always be Alan Rickman for me, but I can picture Adam Driver playing him.

And possibly a Benedict Cumberbatch Voldemort.

What do you think?

They could save money by getting three planks of wood for Ginny Weasley, Cho Chang and Harry himself?
Don't know any child actors but for the adults I expect Keira would be there going "pick me pick me" and Olivia Colman would get a teachery job. Benedict Cumberbatch and Matt Smith already look like Voldemort so sorted there.

AppleKatie · 11/06/2020 20:28

Olivia Colman would do a good Mcgonagal.

Most of the kids are interchangeable with a 1000 other child actors.

Lordamighty · 11/06/2020 20:32

Anyone would be better than Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson & Rupert Grinch, the films were successful despite them & not because of them.

ragged · 11/06/2020 20:38

for me in the movies, it worked well that most the child actors didn't have strong stage presences. That meant there was a lot more room for the other big character parts to shine. Deffo an ensemble cast. & The story is what mattered (for me).

KavvLar · 12/06/2020 09:16

Yes! Olivia Coleman would be a great McGonagall.

Jodie Comer would have been good I think she might be around the right age, maybe a bit too young at the time. Not sure what part she could have played but she would have been better than the rest of them!

IdblowJonSnow · 04/07/2020 02:24

Bit tight re Rupert Grinch, he was at least fairly funny!
Agree re Snape, no one could ever replace AR.
Jodie Comer would have made a great Moaning Myrtle!
Kit Harrington could play Sirius Black.

Minesril · 04/07/2020 06:41

Patrick Stewart as Dumbledore. Should've been cast originally!

kojolo · 04/07/2020 07:06

Adam Driver would be a good Snape.

Ben Wishaw as Remus Lupin and Richard Madden as Sirius Black.

Much as I loved Alan Rickman, all that generation were too old in the original films. They were meant to be early 30s!

SnuggyBuggy · 04/07/2020 07:16

I love any remake to have a real 90s vibe to it.

ChewChewIsMySpiritAnimal · 04/07/2020 07:19

I must be the only person in the world who didn't like Alan rickman as snape.

All the rest of the teachers were fine - except the second dumbledore.

Keepingcomfy · 04/07/2020 07:19

@lordamighty Ahem to that. I'm a Potter nut, actually reading the books again for the 9th time. But for me, the films are completely ruined because Radcliffe. He is absolutely dreadful 😂

letsgomaths · 04/07/2020 07:23

Boris Johnson for professor Lockhart - they have a lot in common. (Sorry, couldn’t resist it.)

BullshitVivienne · 04/07/2020 07:26

@kojolo

Adam Driver would be a good Snape.

Ben Wishaw as Remus Lupin and Richard Madden as Sirius Black.

Much as I loved Alan Rickman, all that generation were too old in the original films. They were meant to be early 30s!

Same! I liked all the actors who played Sirius, Snape and Lupin, but they were supposed to be much younger!
GaraMedouar · 04/07/2020 07:33

I’ve been watching all the films (a few times!) with my DD who is in a Harry Potter phase. The only child I liked from the start was Rupert Grint, funny and natural. Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson are both really annoying , particularly the earlier films - no idea why they were chosen out of the many children who must have been auditioning, there must have been better actors .

Thinking about it Sophie Turner would be really good as Lily. Could also imagine Maisie Williams as Tonks.

parrotonmyshoulder · 04/07/2020 08:10

I’d keep all the teachers.
And cast my DD as Hermione.

kojolo · 04/07/2020 08:12

Jude Law for Gilderoy Lockhart. (I sort of think Ewan McGregor really but Jude Law has that seedy edge)

Jonathan Pryce as Dumbledore. Fiona Shaw as McGonagall. David Bamber as Cornelius Fudge.

PymChurchBeach · 04/07/2020 08:12

They got so much of the casting wrong with those films.

Alan Rickman and Gary Oldman both fantastic but waaaaaaay too old for Snape and Sirius Black. I'd have chosen Santiago Cabrera for Sirius Black, who was meant to be in his early thirties and extremely good looking.

Maggie Smith was brilliantly cast, so was Brendan Gleeson, so was Robbie Coltrane.

Harry, Ron and Hermione were terribly cast.

PymChurchBeach · 04/07/2020 08:13

I liked Rupert Grint the most out of the three leads but the problem was he was so evidently so much cooler and better looking than Daniel Radcliffe.

blondehalo · 04/07/2020 08:25

At the time the films came out I remember thinking how awful and wooden Daniel, Emma and Rupert were, Daniel being the worst. I agree with PP that the films did well despite their terrible acting.

I think they could have cast three fence posts and I wouldn't have noticed the difference.

The little girl from outnumbered would have made a brilliant Hermione

FenellaMaxwell · 04/07/2020 10:27

Ok, I have given this much thought.

Harry: can’t think of a today actor, but I’d have cast Freddie Highmore at the time instead of Dan Radcliffe.
Hermione: Sienna Arif-Knights (Sally in the bbc Malory Towers)
Ron: not sure
Dumbledore: I think actually it needs someone with a slightly darker edge - he did some dreadful things and lied to Harry and endangered him - he wasn’t some twinkly Father Christmas character. Maybe Richard E Grant?
Hagrid: I’m keeping Robbie Coltrane
Mcgonagal: Keeping Maggie Smith too!
Snape: I adore Alan Rickman and he was brilliant but far, far too old. Snape is supposed to be about 32! Ben Whishaw or Tom Sturrige
Lupin: Kit Harrington
Sirius: Ben Barnes
Voldemort: Matt Smith

parrotonmyshoulder · 04/07/2020 10:47

Bella Ramsay as Ginny?

QualityFeet · 04/07/2020 10:52

I was always baffled by how they were so bad. Rupert was personable and some of the background kids were fun but the Daniel and Emma were awful. They were children then but have never seen either be anything other than bloody awful in anything they have done.
