good dvds to rent

I am renting dvds quite a bit as my dh is working away. I get some great free trial deals so at the moment never pay:-) just type free dvd trial into a search engine and there are loads.

But I am running out of ideas to put on my list so need help.

Do you have any good films that you would recommend renting. Not really into horror or mega action type movies. But anything drama, comedy, chick flick whatever....

Need some ideas, thanks.

what has happened to whit stillman?

metropolitan is one of my all-time favourites

spacedonkey · 10/12/2004 15:46

If you haven't seen Amelie, see it, it's brilliant. And Delicatessen is great too (although very strange).

MariNativityPlay · 10/12/2004 15:46

Have you seen Terrence Malick, Days of Heaven and Badlands? Nikita Mikhalkov's Burnt by the Sun (another all-time favourite, very haunting)
My two favourite nasties are the original of The Vanishing, and The Red Squirrel (Spanish).

MariNativityPlay · 10/12/2004 15:48

Bakedpotato, I love you! You are me, except you clearly get to the cinema far more frequently these days. And no, I don't know. He was supposed to be following up Last Days...nothing since. Such a shame.

bakedpotatohoho · 10/12/2004 15:55

i have put days of heaven on wishlist and will do badlands if we get on.

had a look, on the rental website, at burnt by the sun, but i'm afraid of it. it looks as if it might be upsetting. small smiling child on poster ad. will it make me cry? i'm not up to crying at the moment.

nailpolish · 10/12/2004 15:56

tears of the sun is good but sad

nailpolish · 10/12/2004 16:04

the day after tomorrow

MariNativityPlay · 10/12/2004 16:10

Burnt by the Sun IS sad, BP. Don't rent if you don't want a cathartic snivel. But it is so beautifully made and acted, it's a quality blub-fest. Revisit when you are feeling less hormonal, ultimately you won't regret it. The little girl is the director's daughter and she charmed everyone at the Oscars!
How about Lukas Moodysson's Together? I've heard good reports of that.
And if you liked Spinal Tap, you might also enjoy Best in Show and A Mighty Wind...

spacedonkey · 10/12/2004 16:11

oh yes, Best in Show is an absolute hoot!

MariNativityPlay · 10/12/2004 16:12

Especially for dog-lovers, eh spacedonkey! I think Christopher Guest should be forcibly repatriated and made to do films here. But parting him from the other two would be cruel...

spacedonkey · 10/12/2004 16:13

to my utter shame I've never seen spinal tap (or a mighty wind) Blush

MariNativityPlay · 10/12/2004 16:14

I think you'd like both.

spacedonkey · 10/12/2004 16:14

Driving Miss Daisy is one of my top favourite films. Don't know if it's out on DVD though.

phatcat · 10/12/2004 16:14

do you like foreign films bakedpotato? Almodovar's Talk to Her is one of my faves.

MariNativityPlay · 10/12/2004 16:17

I must confess to liking Paulie, the Story of a Parrot (aimed at children Blush) a lot too.

Have never seen Driving Miss Daisy, one of those ones you intend to catch up with. Based on an excellent play, of course Grin

Thought Talk to Her was amazing. He's done some stinkers though, Kika was [vomit emoticon]

hollybet · 10/12/2004 16:32

Marina - we have such similar taste! We watched The Cooler a couple of weekends ago - brilliant - not for the squeamish tho'. and I loved Lantana but I didn't know anyone else who had ever heard of it. And In the Bedroom was so good! My next hire is going to be The Cat's Meow.

And don't you think that Jeremy Northam would be a fantastic Bond ? (I sat thru Happy Texas too Blush)

bakedpotatohoho · 10/12/2004 18:47

i do hope neither of you JN fans sat through The Net, though? i saw that by accident. yikes.

some great tips here, thanks. more welcome too of course

feastofstevenmom · 10/12/2004 19:14

Get Shorty is brill

Mike Basset, England Manager if you like football its totally brilliant

ZCMUM · 16/12/2004 09:56

bakedpotatohoho · 16/12/2004 10:07

yes, loved Big Night.
must add a recommendation of my own in case anyone else is in the same boat -- The Station Agent., which we just saw, is terrific.

DingWongMerrilyOnHigh · 16/12/2004 10:09

The Station Agent was good wasn't it?

In the Cut is excellent if you can bear Meg Ryan, very very sexy co star Michael Ruffalo, I think that's his name.

I liked Scary Movie 3
