oh.... I watched it today and whilst it has it flaws I thought it was an interesting film - the cinematography is brilliant - the greyness of it all is quite all encompassing. I thought JL was really good, the intensity of the camera on her was overwhelming. In particular the first half (Old Testament) left me in high state of anxiety as I didn't really know what would/could happen next - despite the OT story) the baroque-ness of the NT half meant the anxiety induced feeling had receded but I thought it was an interesting pastiche of a whole range of films (the swat teams etc). I listened to Kermode too who said the further away from the film he got the better he thought it was... Am going to give some more thought to the re-creation element....

Vote for Black Swan here

PacificDogwod · 21/09/2017 22:55

Black Swan was... interesting.
As was Noah Hmm

I cannot decide whether they were both really clever or total and utter Shite with a capital S Grin

And I still have no desire whatsoever to see Mother! so thank you for this thread for that alone Wink

raisedbyguineapigs · 22/09/2017 18:33

I really liked Black Swan too. I havent seen Noah. I dont want to like Darren Aranofsky films because he has a not very nice reputation with regards to his relationships with his female leads but I still do.

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 23/09/2017 18:50

I didn't get it..I thought at first it was going to me about getting taken over by mum in law.. Then it got weird and seemed less like that. My friend got it and once explained it all made sense..Guess shouldnt have to explain but still. All fitted well..in the end lol

GriefLeavesItsMark · 24/09/2017 21:01

I have just seen it and really liked it (but I loved Black Swan) Watched most of it with my jaw dropping, totally not what I expected. I was also torn between thinking it was pretentious tosh, or a profound allegory.

SerendipityFelix · 25/09/2017 07:33

Watched it last night. At one point turned to DP and whispered 'WTF is going on?!?' - he had no idea either. We both had this face on for most of it Confused. I love horror films and all the gore and scares (yelped out loud at It fgs) but didn't find this too much in terms of graphic violence etc at all, even the baby eating scene, by that point it was all just so bizarre that it wasn't sickening at all. I didn't get the allegory at all. I assumed for most of it that it was Jennifer Lawrence having a bad dream about an abusive relationship. Leaving the cinema I thought it was just a massive waste of time and hadn't got it at all, I understand the walk outs. On the way home I read some reviews/analysis of it and now I know what it's supposed to be about, I think I like it a little better.....yes, the cinematography is good, Jennifer Lawrence's performance is amazing even when you don't know what's going on. But if you need to look up newspaper articles on the way home to get what the fuck it was you just spent 2 hours of your life on......yeah, I don't think it is a great film, sadly. Just makes me think the director is a pretentious arse. If it had been less cryptic it would be a better film, IMO.

SerendipityFelix · 25/09/2017 07:34

Ps I liked Black Swan too

KERALA1 · 27/09/2017 23:25

I agreed with the Telegraph review 5/5. Yes horrific but lots to digest and think about. Commentary on religion, mans treatment of women, she represented Mother Earth I think and him god.

I wore a scarf to bury head in and didn't actually watch the baby bit.

SerendipityFelix · 28/09/2017 08:47

I'm thinking of going to see it again, as I really didn't get it at all first time around.

SleepingStandingUp · 30/09/2017 12:43

I felt like that Serendipity.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 01/10/2017 12:14

Dh and I went to see it on Wednesday and are still discussing it now!

So are we- but only about how bad it was. We went to see It last night which I really enjoyed but husband didn't . Husband said "it wasn't as bad as Mother!" We both agreed we hope not to see something we can describe as "even worse than Mother !"

KERALA1 · 01/10/2017 16:52

Us too catherine same timescale Grin unsure whether to recommend to friends...
