Movies that don't live up to the book

Everyone thinks I'm weird, I don't do movies. The books are so much better...

I'm trying to watch Gone Girl now but god it's shit, the book wasn't great and now I'm bored.

Bridges of Madison County - such a saccharine Mills & Boon love story in the book, but quite a good film (mostly due to the Streep though)

BrassMonkey84 · 06/06/2015 22:31

One Day - frustrated me that the film just wizzed through all the details.

Girl with the Pearl Earing - just a beautiful book. The film was just so boring.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 06/06/2015 22:31

The only film that is better than the book is Atonement imo.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 06/06/2015 22:34

The Godfather and The Godfather Part 2 are miles better than the book.

Bunbaker · 06/06/2015 22:36

DD absolutely love The Maze Runner series, but says that they have changed the story and the characters so much in the films. The reviewer of the next film even said that they didn't think the screenplay writer had read the books.

Currently watching Kiera Knightly murder Anna Karenina

MarshaBrady · 06/06/2015 22:40

One Day and Gone Girl.

They both just take a few lines from each chapter.

Sorelip · 06/06/2015 22:41

World War Z is such a good book. The film is fucking atrocious. It's the definition of disappointment.

Toomuchstuff12 · 06/06/2015 22:42

Starter For Ten, such a great book but the film was awful. The characters were all wrong in the film.

Bunbaker · 06/06/2015 22:44

I read Gone Girl and thought it was such a boring and badly written book that I didn't even bother seeing the film. OH read it after me and agreed.

Rhubarbgarden · 06/06/2015 22:45

Memoirs of a Geisha. Loved the book, but the film was so disappointing.

Dr Zhivago is a good example of a film that's better than the book.

WellErrr · 06/06/2015 22:45

The hobbit.
The book is amazing. The THREE why!? films were utter shite and an insult to the book. It actually angers me how much they mangled a perfectly good story into Hollywood shite.

And all the HP books.

Bunbaker · 06/06/2015 22:45

I agree on both counts Rhubarb

TwartFaceBeetj · 06/06/2015 22:45

films are never as good as the book. I can't watch them without feeling irrational.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 06/06/2015 22:49

Women in Black was shit compared to the book!

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 06/06/2015 22:50

Bun baker - the film was a shit as the book. Shockingly bad.

RiverTam · 06/06/2015 22:56

DH is watching Workd War Zone as we speak!

Disagree about golden compass, we both enjoyed that a lot. Lord of the Rings was amazing, Hobbit not so good but I still love them.

Hunger Games is awful. So slooooow and dull and do badly cast (Gale and Peera, I'm looking at you, and J Law far too strapping for someone who's meant to be living on the breadline).

RiverTam · 06/06/2015 22:56

World War Z!!!

beavington · 06/06/2015 23:03

I loved the book, The Beach but the film was terrible. I prefer the film of The Shining to the book though!

Machakos · 06/06/2015 23:05

The Edge of Reason (second Bridget Jones film). I hate it when they change the ending.

iklboo · 06/06/2015 23:09

Jumper
The Black Dahlia

We had to turn the films off.

YonicScrewdriver · 06/06/2015 23:09

Really, Bill? I was going to cite Silence of the Lambs as one where the film was better.

I think it does depend sometimes on which you encounter first.

YonicScrewdriver · 06/06/2015 23:11

All books have to be massively abridged to make it into films though. Think how long the full audiobook of even a short book takes about 4-5 hours!

YonicScrewdriver · 06/06/2015 23:11

The Golden Compass was utter shite.
