I think the best films with a twist are the ones where you're not even expecting a twist, a who dunnit is good fun but the real gaspers are the ones where you're not even expecting it!

Ive found a film called Deadly Strangers 1974 on google starring Hayley Mills which sounds a similar plot but I don't think it was that film. It is now driving me mad!

Arlington Road, Seven, The Others, Memento, The Mist and Unbreakable all have quite downbeat twists which I always find stick with you longer.

Storynana, could the movie you are thinking of be A Kiss Before Dying, with Sean Young and Matt Dillon?

For me it's got to be Butterfly on a wheel. I totally did not see that coming!

Also love unbreakable and Shutter Island.

I now want to watch Primal fear Smile

I got Shutter Island straightaway.

Usual suspects was amazing.

To this day, I still can't quite work out Twelve Monkeys

I remember sitting down to watch Vanilla Sky with my husband and a friend many years ago and all of us being slightly bemused and not really knowing what was going on. My husband, who for an intelligent man is hopeless with even slightly complicated film plots, disappeared upstairs to do his ironing about 15 mins before it ended. When he came downstairs again, our friend and I were raving about what a brilliant film it was and how it all made perfect sense etc etc. He was really cross!

The Others is a good one too, as is Identity (the one with John Cusack, whom I have a bit of a crush on).

Another vote here for Identity, brilliant film. Also Orphan, but it's a bit dark!

Shutter Island was great the first time around and even though the element of surprise had gone I enjoyed it equally the second time.

I watched the original Wicker Man a few weeks back (I haven't seen the newer one) and although it was beyond weird I stuck with it and the ending was a good one.

Jean de Florette/Manon des Sources. The book is The Water Of The Hills by Marcle Pagnol and it's the only book that has made me cry. Brilliant twist at the end. Good film. Excellent book.

Not a scary one, but surprisingly I didn't guess the twist in Crazy Stupid Love with Steve Carrell.
