Need help - what can I put on my Lovefilm list?

Very self-indulgent thread, really.
I like things like Being John Malkovitch, The Royal Tenenbaums, the odd romantic comedy, DH likes spy thrillers and a bit of intelligent sci-fi.
Dislike crap comedies (step forward Meet the Fockers), action movies, slushy pathetic girly crap and musicals.
Can't cope with anything - and I mean anything - that involves child/parental death, concentration camp films.

What do you recommend?

Have you seen Magnolia ? Very much a people watching film in the vein of Being J M and Royal Tenenbaums. It has Tom Cruise in it but don't be put off, it's v unlike anything else he has done (ie pretty good).

Have you seen Million Dollar Baby ? Excellent film (said by the woman who normally doesn't like boxing/sport films)

Secret Window
Once Upon a Time in Mexico
Blow

cupcakes · 21/03/2006 14:11

Adaptation?
I haven't seen it but it had very good reviews and has something to do with Being John Malkovitch.
I'll look for a review...

It's the same scriptwriter as Malkovoch.

Have seen Magnolia (liked it, esp Cruise - brilliant performance, has coloured my view of him as a person though!).
And Adaptation - which is vvvv good.
He also wrote Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. God I love that film.
Fargo brilliant.

Will try Million Dollar Baby and Suzywong's suggestions as haven't seen any of them.

Keep 'em coming.

Lantana
Ripley's Game
The Life Aquatic

NomDePlume · 21/03/2006 14:45

I thought the Life Aquatic was pants, was expecting it to be much better given that it is by the same team who did the Tenenbaums.

cupcakes · 21/03/2006 14:45

Broken Flowers
The Constant Gardener
Sideways

  • I haven't actually seen any of these but they're on my dvd list.

Pruni · 21/03/2006 14:47

Romuald et Juliette for some subtitled snogging

Marina · 21/03/2006 14:51

Swingers - indecently funny and no pampas grass to be seen anywhere

NomDePlume · 21/03/2006 14:52

Secretary is good

suzywong · 21/03/2006 14:52

Confessions of A Dangerous Mind V Good

suzywong · 21/03/2006 14:53

very saucy from a Lady's POV

Marina · 21/03/2006 14:53

And his address is...

Marina · 21/03/2006 14:55

If we are talking sauce I love The Last Seduction - Linda Fiorentino is a real hussy in that.
And The War of the Roses..."Have you ever made angry love?" "Is there any other kind?"
Accidental Tourist, notable for Geena Davis turning in a less annoying performance than usual

suzywong · 21/03/2006 14:55

The Station Agent

yes, let's talk Sauce
