Need help - what can I put on my Lovefilm list?

Very self-indulgent thread, really.
I like things like Being John Malkovitch, The Royal Tenenbaums, the odd romantic comedy, DH likes spy thrillers and a bit of intelligent sci-fi.
Dislike crap comedies (step forward Meet the Fockers), action movies, slushy pathetic girly crap and musicals.
Can't cope with anything - and I mean anything - that involves child/parental death, concentration camp films.

What do you recommend?

Sea of Love. Grimly compelling plot, lots of sex, and Al Pacino...

Pruni · 21/03/2006 14:58

Can someone give me a basic outline (no spoilers though) of The Station Agent? I've heard the title so many times but it gives nothing away and consequently I can't imagine what it's about.

Is In The Cut an 18 because of the sex or is there violence (which I can't take at a cert 18 level)?

suzywong · 21/03/2006 14:59

That Ellen Birkin is a bit of a dirty mare isn't she. No offence

Whats that one with Robert De Niro and Jessica Lange, in a similar vien - Night and the City, I think

suzywong · 21/03/2006 14:59

both I think cupcakes, there is a rather unpleasant beheading or two and a BJ

NomDePlume · 21/03/2006 14:59

run the moves through imdb's search engine, they'll give you a brief synopsis

NomDePlume · 21/03/2006 14:59

movies

The Station Agent is about a small person/dwarf/midget who inherits a disused railway station and makes friends and learns about life and love in a small town. Very good

cupcakes · 21/03/2006 15:02

BJ I can handle (Shock) but not any BH.

Marina · 21/03/2006 15:02

suze I bet you anything the BJ got the 18 and not the beheadings

I am a bit of a film buff - her is my selection:

Constant Gardner

was extremely disappointed - good acting but very average otherwise - have seen much better political thrillers that are far more touching

Broken Flowers

has some wonderful comic touches and Billy Murry is great (altough I think he is trying to do too much of the Lost In Translation role)

Lost in Transaltion

amazing dark comedy - very touching - don't normally cry - but found myself with tears in my eyes with this

Crash
Absolutely brilliant - very very raw racism in LA - fab acting all round (except Sandra Bullock -but then she is crap in almost all movies)

One of my top 10 films:
favourite thriller/love stories of all time:

CHINA TOWN - Jack Nicholson is amazing - haven't seen him in a decent movie since the 70's - China Town was made in the early 70's (I think)

Absolutley ANTHING with Al Pacino (except Scarface) !! - the sexist short man in the world Grin

koolkat · 21/03/2006 15:12

I would highly recommend "the Machinist" amazing twisty turny thriller but as it involves death NOT for you pruni !!

Pruni · 21/03/2006 15:14

Oh death I don't mind, it's deaths of children, children being left behind, etc.
One of my favourite films is Kill Bill. Grin

Pruni - don't want to give too much away - but the Machinist does involve child death - so don't watch it - sorry !!

suzywong · 21/03/2006 15:15

no no not The Machinist, he knocks down a little boy! Great film though, filmed in Barcelona for some strange reason

koolkat · 21/03/2006 15:17

SW - I have just warned her !

Barcelona ? Really - didn't look like Barcelona ! Barcelona is beautiful. Looked more like a dark industrial estate in the USA !!

Marina · 21/03/2006 15:17

Did someone say Barcelona?
ALL of Whit Stillman, Pruni, starting with the lovely, lovely Metropolitan.
