Rape case - distressing content - have they got away with it?

BBC news report

Hopefully this link works but I really wish it wasn’t necessary to post this.

Two teenage girls, separately raped by a group of boys. Premeditated. Filmed. Convicted. And still the rapists get to go home with a non custodial sentence. I’m disgusted but not shocked.

Those poor girls. Reporting what happened and giving evidence. Yes, they were believed. But the sentences are woeful.

We must not criminalise children, at any cost- so we are told in my role (think a social care adjacent role).

Often at the cost of other children 🤷‍♀️

I'm all for not criminalising children - when the offence is more of a simple low value shop theft or a minor bit of graffiti

But major crimes don't fall into the same category. We wouldn't hear of the monster that murdered the three girls in Southport receiving such a lenient sentence - and the same should be true for rape!

What rapists need is long unpleasant jail sentences but we discuss rehabilitation as if a bit of education will stop a knife attack gang rape.

97% of reported rapists get away with it in Britain. It’s common knowledge globally that we don’t protect English girls from rapists.

I am suprised rapey men don’t come here just to rape - it’s not hard. You are pretty much guaranteed to get away with it.

We need far tougher sentences. To deport every foreign criminal to free up prison spaces and to give rapists long boring sentences.

Instead people say ‘we don’t want to ruin the boys lives’ or ‘rehabilitation’ or let’s give them counselling and free art classes in prison.

What about the victims? By letting off rapists you are once again damaging the victims.

Our justice system is pathetic. And those poor girls have been let down massively by our weak, shit, justice system.

I recently read that in medieval britain 25% of rapists brought to trial were convicted.

How have we actually managed to go backwards in terms of women's rights from the 1300s?

I've also filled in the form. Might write to my MP.

These guys were found guilty. It’s the sentence that’s the problem.

EverybodyLTB · 21/05/2026 23:26

I’ve filled in the form too. You can put in today’s date and the details and a link to the case. I could not be more baffled and disgusted at the judge’s comments and sentencing. Madness to focus on things like the boys’ previous lack of “big” crimes. They were 13-15 wtf?! It’s like saying a murderer hasn’t previously committed a big crime so it’s ok. What a bizarre thing to say. The lack of focus on the impact on the victims is so disgusting I can hardly even articulate myself and how furious I am. The judge is a disgrace

Ohcrap082024 · 21/05/2026 23:45

As I’ve just posted on the other thread in AIBU, the want/need to rehabilitate the males has taken priority over the rights of the females to justice and safety.

And I’m still waiting on the other thread for someone to come forward with actual evidence that such community rehabilitation actually works. Science based evidence. How does the youth offending team actually rehabilitate gang rapists?

I'm absolutely disgusted and have also submitted it for review. 😡😠

OtterlyAstounding · 22/05/2026 00:18

Jesus Christ, this is unimaginably disgusting. Are women and girls really so worthless in the eyes of society?

Obviously it's just wishful thinking, but sometimes I really wish I had the power to take criminals like this out the back of the courthouse after conviction, and personally put a bullet in them.

Don't bother trying to rehabilitate them because it won't bloody work. Don't bother locking them up for five or ten years to just come out even more warped and angry, with decades left to hurt more women and girls. It's a waste of time and money, and only endangers more people. Just take care of the problem on the spot - it's not like humans are an endangered species; there's plenty of us, we don't need to keep the bad ones alive.

(Again, I'm not actually in favour of state execution. But damned if I wouldn't do it myself.)

The judge should be struck off for this.

Twinandatwoyearold · 22/05/2026 05:52

We are slowly being desensitised to the rape of children in Western society.

Why shouldn’t children be criminalised if they are criminals? I would prefer them to be locked up for life than living next door to a decent human being..

If you choose to commit a serious crime, you should be locked up, tough shit. Yes their childhood may have sucked but in this case they have now destroyed more children’s lives. Lock them up.

I am bored of ‘let’s not criminalise the criminals’. Rape is virtually decriminalised in the U.K.

And yes I would love to see evidence that rehabilitation works for gang rapists. Yes it’s cheaper, yes it creates jobs, yes the be kind virtue signallers can feel good about themselves (while saying people like me are mean and nasty and not progressive).

Has anyone seen the reenactment of the judges comments at the rape gang court cases? It’s on YouTube - it’s horrendous.

Next election I will be voting for a party that is tough on crime. As I said upthread - deport all foreign criminals and create room to lock up British criminals. Make the country safer.

All this cctv is nonsense isn’t it - even when caught they get let off. See the Manchester airport attack where that poor police officer is punched - jury apparently cannot determine if that ‘man’ is guilty.

We live in a very twisted time. The criminals are victims.

We can actually do something about this https://www.gov.uk/ask-crown-court-sentence-review

Have you posted this on the AIBU thread?

might be worth more views.

This is horrendous. I always knew rape cases were badly dealt with here but until we went through it as a family, I had no idea just how awful and harrowing it was.

I completely understand why women and girls don’t want to see the process through. My daughter was treated like she was the one on trial by the defence barrister. Bear in mind she was a child when she was attacked. He was convicted but wasn’t given a custodial sentence as “he was the family breadwinner” 🤷‍♂️

I am so sorry Flowers

DoubleShotEspressox · 22/05/2026 07:32

I’ve signed. This is appalling. Barely a slap on the wrist for a violent, premeditated, gang rape, no remorse and a repeat pattern of behaviour.

Hi yep, a few times and others have picked it up and done the same 👍

L0V315 · 22/05/2026 08:41

I have submitted my forms.

Those poor brave girls, 😢

Fucking misogynistic wankstain of a judge, he should be ashamed of himself. He basically has given the green light for boys and men to rape, cunt.

I wonder if judges such as him are also rapists.

I was too late - but this is a good sign. The Attorney General is not taking any more requests to review the Sentencing unless from any of the victims or their immediate family members:

Guidance
We are already considering applications to have the sentences in the following case reviewed:

  • Three unnamed offenders aged 15, 15, and 14, sentenced on 21st May 2026 in Southampton Crown Court for sexual offences including rape.
Unless you have a personal connection to the case, there’s no need to make another application for one of these cases – it will not affect how the review is handled.

But we still want to hear from you if you are the victim of the offence, or an immediate family member, and want to make a personal application.

It is a good sign. At the very least the family knows that the public cares.

Twinandatwoyearold · 22/05/2026 17:14

Tune into LBC now the presenter is disgusted

Twinandatwoyearold · 22/05/2026 17:15

LBC presenter Saying the system is set up to not allow the perp to go to prison.

He is saying they should always go to prison!

Also names of kids should be given due to severity - I agree

weareallcats · 22/05/2026 18:43

I came on here to post about this, as just read about it on the BBC website - I am so furious, I can’t put it into words. Absolutely disgusting. I know from my own experience that boys of 14/15 are capable of serious sexual assault. I adore my 2 sons but could never forgive them if they did this, and they know it.

EverybodyLTB · 22/05/2026 20:27

I was heartened to see in the news that the influx of requests to review has had an impact. I do think the volume of requests and public disgust will make whoever reviews it think what they’re doing. The original judge should be sacked!

Also, they’re talking about how the perpetrators have various conditions and MH concerns, learning difficulties etc but then why does the judge never condemn the local authority and by extension central government, for failing the perpetrators. If they are “doing so well” how did they fall through societies cracks and end up as gang rapists? The judge made it seem as though the perpetrators’ own upbringing caused them to become rapists - do they stay at home then in the same environment? Whole thing is fucking madness!!

Ohcrap082024 · 22/05/2026 20:46

Indeed @EverybodyLTB

How on earth can we rely on community based rehabilitation if the very community/families in which these males have been raised have contributed to their criminality?

In the case from the 1997, the mother of one of the rapists reported her son to the police. He was part of a gang of males, similar ages to this case, who raped a lone female repeatedly and threw her in a canal. They received significant prison sentences and some of them were named in the press, despite their young ages, because the banning order was lifted.

That mother was ostracised by her community. I wonder what, if anything, the parents in the current case have done to encourage their sons to accept responsibility thus far.

When I filled it out it said it only needed one application and no need to submit if someone else already had - and I thought they deserved every one of them, hopefully an avalanche, that they received. Wondering if there’s a petition anywhere.

At least Two of them have only recently been diagnosed with ADHD

Oh god. I really am gobsmacked by this. It’s really upset me. What the actual fuck!!!!!! How can this happen? Surely they will appeal it.

@EverybodyLTB quite agree. The original judge is a fucking disgrace!
