What is UN Women for?

I’ve been shocked by UN Women’s weird responses to the rapes and sexual mutilations in Israel on October 7th. There seem to be quite a lot of well documented cases of rapes and murders including several videos and confessions by the rapists, eyewitnesses and lots of forensic evidence. Many of the released hostages also say they experienced sexual violence. UN Women has made a statement but it is not a condemnation, it doesn’t mention Hamas or classify the rapes as acts of terrorism and it wasn’t made until the end of November.
What is the role of UN Women really “supposed” to be? Do you think they actually serve a useful purpose? I think they should have been quicker responding and more direct in their statement, but given that the UN seems to criticise Israel more than any other state, it doesn’t surprise me that they didn’t act more decisively. I suspect there would have been a much stronger reaction if the victims had not been Israeli.

I suspect you're right. The UN is made up of member countries around the world and is highly political. It reflects the stances of its member countries. Many don't like Jews. And it bloody shows. Many don't like women much either. A double blow for Jewish women.

Yes, I believe their 'statement' would have been not just stronger and more meaningful, but more immediate. I thought part of the mission of UN Women was to defend all women. So if they can't condemn the rape, torture and mutilation of a large number of women by a terrorist group then....who are they and what's their purpose? Nearly 60 days it took for them to speak up. Without the pressure to do so, you've got to wonder if they actually would have eventually.

I've been quite shocked at the blatant Jew-hatred promoted on social media by some UN employees (https://twitter.com/Khaledhzakariah/status/1740372126828257454). But these things often start, or are enabled and tolerated, at the top. The UN has had a problem with anti-Israel bias and antisemitism for a long time, and as @ChickenSoupAndLokshen says, it now feels like a double-blow for Jewish women.

They have been awful on this. They're more than useless, they're actively harmful. It seems the UN as a whole has agendas other than what we think they have.

ChickenSoupAndLokshen · 31/12/2023 00:25

They definitely do @NeedToKnow101. This research showcases the proportion of different countries' populations that harbour antisemitic views: global100.adl.org/map.

Dive down into different regions / countries. It'll shock you. Essentially, according to this research, more than 25% of the world's population harbours antisemitic attitudes. They are represented at the UN.

Israel won't experience fairness or justice via the international community. It needs to disregard the world and stand on its own two feet. Which is a travesty.

I'm bewildered by this Jew hate that is so endemic, far-reaching, irrational and plain wrong. I don't know what the answer is but do know that it won't be held by the UN.

ChickenSoupAndLokshen · 31/12/2023 00:36

Just to add, do check out the research for the countries in the Middle East and North Africa region. The figures will dismay.

etmoiandme · 31/12/2023 00:40

@ChickenSoupAndLokshen That link is broken, is there another way to find it? I know it's going to be really depressing and probably shouldn't look at it but I'll put my hard hat on.

Aaron95 · 31/12/2023 00:50

There is a war going on in Gaza. In every war since the dawn of time horrific things happen to women whilst it is going on. This one is no different. If you don't think horrific attrocities are not being perpetrated by belligerents from both sides you are living in cloud cuckoo land.

ChickenSoupAndLokshen · 31/12/2023 01:19

Try this @etmoiandme: global100.adl.org/map/

@Aaron95 we know there's a war. It's terrible. This thread is about the UN's slow reaction to Hamas' massacre that started the war.

RedToothBrush · 31/12/2023 11:56

What is UN Women for?

Unwomen.
Aka men.

DewHopper · 01/01/2024 12:08

Men.

stomachameleon · 01/01/2024 20:34

Well I follow a women's feminist site linked to this and the quote today is from a well known black queer person ' with no menstrual history'
Aka a bloke.
Am raging.

TheRussiansHackedMyKitchen · 01/01/2024 20:39

UN Women don't even know what a woman is.
Their Twitter posts are regularly a joke.

DifficultBloodyWoman · 03/01/2024 06:44

The UK representative to UNWomen is….Monroe Bergdorf.

Therefore, I can only conclude that UNWomen is for Men.

stomachameleon · 03/01/2024 10:34

As an older women who is not particularly well read about all this it just feels like a giant piss take.
I may be wrong clearly.

ChickenSoupAndLokshen · 03/01/2024 10:44

Nope @stomachameleon. You're not wrong. Spot on, I'd say.

Hamas were the government in charge of Gaza. The people of Gaza are the only group in the world with their own relief agency, UNWRA. So far, that i know of,16 UNWRA employees have been found to be Hamas members. One of the hostages was kept in the house of an UNWRA employee. UNWRA supply Hamas with food, money, materials, which they then steal from the people and have built the most complex terror complex the world has possibly seen. The UN is at least complicit in this whole atrocity, not only to the people of Gaza who should have had all this money and aid spent on them but also to Israelis who were attacked. Hamas is a very very wealthy organisation. I think that the whole war will really expose the UN as being corrupt, inept and possibly fraudulent and guilty of aiding terrorism. As the fall out from the war continues i think the UN will be so diminished when their part in this is fully uncovered.

stomachameleon · 09/01/2024 18:37

@lovelysoap brilliant post.

What the actual fuck?

So lesbians are expected to sleep with men. The un is definitely anti women.

ChickenSoupAndLokshen · 09/01/2024 19:36

@lovelysoap that's a great post. My fear is that either no one will be minded (or are unable) to uncover the corruption and/or no one will care enough to look.

etmoiandme · 09/01/2024 23:25

This isn't about UN Women but related.

I assume the colonial feminists they want to shut down are Jewish Zionist ones. Seems like some kind of desperate and pathetic attempt to excuse their 7/10 rape-apologism.

Ffs...so lesbians aren't even allowed their own day to celebrate without what must be a comparitively tiny proportion of ,trans lesbians' being shoe horned in.
I've no real knowledge of UN women, am not Jewish or lesbian but this has really angered me. What a fucking joke.
