Just diagnosed w PND. Antidepressants and breastfeeding?

I've suspected for a while now that I have PND and my Edinburgh scale score was sufficiently high for me to be referred for weekly counselling and weekly check-ups with my GP as well.

Thing is, it's getting worse and I was evaluated yday by a sleep clinic person and got a higher score and have been asked to consider antidepressants...

I really want to carry on BF but the health visitor said I'd have to stop if I take AD's whic is why I've avoided them until now. Is this true?

I will be seeing my GP again next week, and just wanted to be a bit better informed.

Thanks!

Verso, I think if you check the archives there may be some old threads about it. Or you could try starting a new thread with it in the title.
Have you had the thyroid result back yet?

Verso · 19/07/2005 15:31

Not yet, no. I'm hoping I may get the result tomorrow at my weekly GP appointment.

Hi Jolly. I haven't ended up taking the AD's as yet. I'm trying to wait and see if I get better without. I have weekly counselling, which helps a bit, though I'm starting to find the weekly journey to the hospital a bit of a bind.

A lot of the time, I just feel I need a break from DD, so now that DH has finished work for the summer, things are feeling a bit better as it isn't all just falling on my shoulders.

Still waiting for the results of my thyroid test, too. I should get it tomorrow as it wasn't available at the GP last week.

How old is your baby, Jolly?

Hi Verso, just wanted to say that I have recently been diagnosed with PND and I have started taking an AD and I'm still breastfeeding. My GP said that it was fine...

Adrift, I used to work in the company that makes dotheipin and there is good evidence that it is OK to use it in breastfeeding. They have gone so far as to calculate the dose present in breast milk (tiny). A long term study (over 5 years) showed that the children who had been BF when their mother was taking Dothiepin had no behavioural/educational probelms later in life. In fact there was a slight trend to show that the children of treated mothers did better than those children who's mothers had *untreated depression.

ive never heard of dothiepin, i really need to be on AD,S as i have PND and not coping very well but have been reluctanct to try cos im still BF. Are there any known side-effects from taking this, when i took prozac i used to get dizzy spells, nausea really bad sweats and i wouldnt want to go through that again

happymerryberries · 26/07/2005 20:46

It is sometimes know as Prothiaden...it's trade name.

It is one of the older tricyclic antidepressants. It can't be promoted for use in BF, but there is a reasonable amount of evidence that it is OK. Like all ADs there are side effects.

HTH

I am taking lofepramine which is a tricyclic one. I've only been taking it a few days but the first day was awful. It felt exactly like being really really drunk. I am still a bit dozy but getting better. I've got the sweating thing too though.

I seem to be managing ok without the AD's so far, but thanks for the replies.
