Been prescribed citalopram but worried about side effects

A few weeks ago I saw my GP as I felt physically and mentally terrible and he prescribed citalopram. I think the pills will probably help but I'm worried about the side effects. My appendix burst about 18months ago and its taken me this long and lots of probiotics and supplements to get my appetite back, stop feeling sick, having upset stomachs and keep my weight stable so I really don't want to take anything that will make me feel bad. So they've sat in my cupboard for 4 weeks while i try to cure myself with fresh air and exericse. Anyone with any experience?

I couldnt take them. Took one dose and was off the planet. Literally couldnt function.

GP switched me to Amatriptyline and Ive been on it over a year now with no side effects at all.

My dad however has been on citalopram for 12mnths with no side effects at all. Think it depends on the person TBH.

I would advise making sure there is another adult to be able to do anything you need to do re childcare etc and try a dose, you will know after the first one if you are reacting to it or not.

That does help loads thanks. I think I'll have to give it a try.

I do know how hard it is to think positively when depressed or to believe that pills will really help but the only side effects I had with citalopram were a dry mouth (drank lots of water) and very vivid dreams. Both wore off within a month (so if you had started 4 weeks ago they would have passed by now). I felt SO much better within myself that I would gladly have put up with worse side effects.

I have been on them for about 9 weeks now and had no side effects.

My advice is give them a go see how you feel.
