How can I cope with an adult child’s mental health needs?

Looking for a bit of a hand hold really.
i have an adult child with mental health issues and I have ended up organising my life around what they need.
I can’t have my friends round, my partner can’t stay, the atmosphere in the house is often hostile.
i feel trapped and cannot see a way of changing things.
I think I need to somehow reframe my situation but I can’t see how to.

As harsh as it sounds take a step back. I know easier said then done.

I’m guessing they live at home? If so, it’s difficult but it is your house and I would expect them to understand that you also live there and will be having friends over when you wish. Presumably they have a room they can go to? I have quite severe MH issues but I’ve never expected my family not to invite people over as it is their house too. If I can’t cope, I go to my room. Even when psychotic.

You can't set yourself on fire to keep someone else warm. You need to make things clear that you will support them but your lifestyle will not be changing.

You don’t let them dictate to you what you can or can’t do in your own home. If they don’t like it, they can lock themselves in their room or move out.

Just to add, your MH is just as important as anyone else's. And you may need to stress that.

BeigeCardiganOfDoom · 22/09/2026 18:53

They need to move out. Supported living is an option for those that truly cannot cope alone.

Italiangreyhound · 22/09/2026 18:55

I am so sorry. What sort of support does your adult child have already?

Chocolateisgood · 22/09/2026 19:59

They have no support other than me.
you are right, I need to start thinking about what I want to do in my hoise. I suppose it is easier to just not have people round as I don’t know how much stress it will cause my child. I guess they would probably hide.
it isn’t that they dictate my behaviour but more that I feel responsible for their welfare.

Im sorry it is so hard and the mh support in england is pretty much non existent. Its just rubbish.

Had to leave work today to come and rescue them. This doesn’t feel sustainable at all. I don’t think there is really any help available. Has any been able to access anything
