Accidentally taken extra dose of Propanolol

hi all, I’m prescribed Propanolol for anxiety and have recently upped my dosage from 1 per day to 3 per day as per my GP’s advice.

i dozed off this afternoon and took a Propanolol when I woke up (about 8pm)…

just now I have gone to the cupboard to take my birth control pill and antidepressant… I wasn’t paying any attention and I took my birth control and another Propanolol instead ..

I suffer from extreme panic attacks and health anxiety so this has sent me into a complete frenzy. Can anybody advise? As seen it’s late and my 4 year old is asleep in bed and I don’t drive so my partner would have to drive, meaning we would have to get my 4yo up, if it meant going to a&e… but I’m unsure if this is necessary.

Call111
They will advise you

I’ve done it before and so has someone else I know infant she took 3 before her driving lesson (don’t ask) stupid idea!🤣 but we’ve both been absolutely fine. How many mg? I take 40mg 3X a day and sometimes they aren’t spaced out well x

BibbityBoppityTwo · 27/08/2026 22:11

Agree with calling 111, but you should be absolutely fine.

In fact *

My DP used to take it and he thinks you'll be fine, just very sleepy. Call 111 if you want medical reassurance though.

Oh goodness!! I’m on 40mg yes - I thought 80mg at first and started really panicking but I was looking at another medication packet - honestly it’s like I’m just half asleep today! 😭 x

I've done it and my teens have done it (accidentally , obviously.) It was fine. None of us had any concerning symptoms, not underlying low blood pressure and we slept it off.

Give 111 a bell and they'll advise.

Thank you, this reassures me a lot :) I’m so so tired today that it was like I was on autopilot when I went to take my usual meds and I took another without even noticing what I was doing ! X

Drink water and get some sleep you’ll be ok xx

Pinklightning · 27/08/2026 22:22

What’s your heart rate at the moment?

Yellowundermarine · 27/08/2026 22:23

My dosage is 160mg a capsule. You haven't even taken two at one (which would still be only half my dose). You'll be absolutely fine. Educate yourself on dosages and treatments if you did overdose and that might alleviate a lot of your anxiety.

Wipeywipey · 27/08/2026 22:25

I used to be on the 80mg slow release and took an extra dose by accident once, I maybe felt slightly sleepier than usual but it didn't do much. After they stopped being available I was put on 40mg and could top-up up to 160mg each day using my 10mg (which I took 2 at a time) if I was in a very bad place. I think you will be fine as your doses are spaced and not too high.

I have been moved to amitriptyline now and am crashing out on 10mg within the hr and sleeping over 10 hrs each time and groggy all day - this is one I would not want to double dose!

Isn’t it funny how differently things affect us? I’m on 50 of amitrip and it doesn’t make me sleepy to that extent.

I am on my first week and it is calming down a bit. I found it odd the GP put me from something that slows the heart to something that speeds it up without tapering, so I wonder if that was part of it too. The dose might need to go up as is for migraines but not had one this week so it is either working or not migraine o'clock yet!

OneQuickCoralQuoter · 28/08/2026 10:20

Update - I went a bit lightheaded but that’s about it. Woke up this morning and I’m fine.
