Hello, I’ve been through a lot in life and I’m now at the age where I want to give back. So, made the decision to volunteer for the Samaritans. I’ve been training since March and now have a mentor who listens in to the calls whilst I talk. The last couple,of times, I’ve struggled with my words, can’t think of what to say next and worry I’m doing it all wrong! I’m fed up, I really wanted to help, please advise anyone?

Good on you for wanting to give back!

Continue to use the training that Samaritans offers, and ask the mentor for help and guidance. Sometimes silence and space is perfect. I will say the Samaritans is especially tough and there’s no surprise and no shame that you may find it difficult.

Thank you. I really do want to help other people. The minute I’m taking a call I’ve clammed up a couple of times, this leaves me feeling useless ☹️

People just want a listening ear. Dont feel pressured to sayimg anything in particular. Just say i hear you, sounds like a rough time, sounds like a lot to deal with . Nothing in particular. You are a hero for listening. Keep going!
