Covid and mental health conditions

May be a strange question but can the covid virus exacerbate or trigger a pre existing mental health condition?
My husband had covid 4 years ago, permanently lost his sense of smell. 6 months after this he became extremely unwell with a severe mental health condition that came out of nowhere.
Dont no if it is connected in any way.
Our lives were destroyed overnight and 4 years later still in recovery, heavily medicated and under a mental health team
2 weeks ago he got covid again, was quite unwell with it. He has gotten over the initial cough/cold symptoms but has been left with extreme fatigue/exhaustion
On top of this he doesn't seem himself and I am putting 2 and 2 together and wondering if this is going to trigger something.
Has anyone else been effected by covid in this way?

Hello, I don't know about covid triggering new mental illness but I'm bipolar and physical illness does trigger my bipolar. It was identified during the pandemic that those with severe mental illnesses like bipolar and schizophrenia etc are more susceptible to being more unwell with covid and because of this qualify for covid vaccines. For a long time I have felt the interplay between my physical and mental and have paid for the flu jab for quite a few years and I kept up wearing a mask of busy commuter public transport post covid as I noticed I was getting fewer coughs, colds and sickness bugs and that was good for my mental health.
