Any antidepressants that don't make you gain weight?

Hi all,

I've been on sertraline since just before Christmas and they have definitely helped.

My problem is my appetite has doubled and I'm gaining weight and this is making me depressed again.

Weight is a big deal for me so I'm thinking of changing to another antidepressant to see if that helps.

Was wondering if anyone had any experience with this?

Thank you x

I lost weight on fluoxetine. I am now on duloxetine, and I did lose initially as it made me feel nauseous.
Everyone is different though, and I am sure someone will be around to say that the meds I mentioned made them balloon.

Unfortunately most antidepressants/anti anxiety/anti psychotics have potential to cause metabolic issues, you should see your doctor and discuss what other options you have, every single person will have a different experience unfortunately.

The only antidepressants I’ve put weight on was mirtazapine so steer clear of that.

Maybe look on electronic medicines compendium for side effects see which ones cause weight gain

fluoxetine Is also prescribed for BED because it reduces the urge to binge so that is a good option for an AD if you want to avoid weight gain.

I'm on venlafaxine (which I swapped straight to from sertraline) and my appetite is non-existent so I lost weight. Food is an actual chore these days.

Venlafaxine

Pamspeople · 30/01/2025 17:59

Venlafaxine can be extremely difficult to stop taking, so be careful OP.

I have been on fluoxetine for a few years with no weight gain. I actually lost some weight in the first couple of months on it.
