Starting Mirtazapine handhold

Hi I've had a pretty bad year and this last month has been particularly bad - I developed tinnitus and this triggered insomnia which sent me into a spiral . My GP has given me mirtazapine 15 mg and zopiclone and told me take them together but wouldn't that knock me out too much ?

Also aside of the weight gain ( I'll chose sleep over weight gain atm ) though this does worry me, did people find it difficult to come off ?
Could do with some positive stories if possible as I hate taking new things .

I take mirtazapine 15g every evening to help my sleep and never feel woozy with it. I was prescribed it for anxiety and also take sertraline during the day for depression.

Thanks that's really positive. Are u in uk ? Lowest dose seems to be 15 mg prescribed but many people seem to do 7.5 so I guess could speak to GP about that. I suppose it's trial and error . It made me feel better reading your reply .

I am in the UK. I'm prescribed 15mg but just break them in two. Makes the prescription go longer so will save you money.

I haven't tried mirtazapine but I do know people it has worked for. I know someone who finds it a godsend.

I've taken zopiclone a lot. I do think there's some times where you're physically exhausted but have such bad insomnia that you just need to knock yourself out. But you'll get much better quality sleep if you can avoid it, so I'd recommend looking into taking magnesium and tryptophan an hour before bedtime and see if that and the mirtazapine is sufficient.

I don't recommend letting yourself have too many sleepless nights in a row trying to avoid zopiclone though. Sleep begets sleep for one thing. Missing too many nights can badly affect your mental and physical health for another.

Could you let me know what trytophan supplements you use and strength please ?

I found mirtazapine great to start with decent sleep, improved mood unfortunately as time went on ended up on 150mg daily and ineffective.

rubyslipperss · 23/12/2024 17:36

Has anyone taken mirtazapine with nytol ?
I'm thinking instead of the zopiclone

My dh has been prescribed mirtazapine and zopiclone. He found the zopiclone only knocked him out for 3 or 4 hours tops.
He's been prescribed promethizine instead of zopiclone - it's an antihistamine that makes you drowsy. The plus is that it's non addictive. Apparently zopiclone becomes less effective over time anyway.

I don’t think that you mean 150mg? 😂

Hi this is what I'm worried about . However the plus is that I've gone down from zopiclone 7.5 to half of that and ok so far . Still find I wake up a lot but I think the mirtazapine is relaxing me enough to let me go back to sleep .
I had a bad reaction to promethazine last week - so that's why I was wondering about nytol .

Maybe that one was 60mg ,was definitely one Ad I was on was 150 mg been on so many different ones.

rubyslipperss · 24/12/2024 15:57

I havent been able to do with out the zopiclone yet - mainly because it's Christmas and we have more people in the house and finding the evenings a bit more stressful. Hopefully I can taper off after Christmas?

Ibe just been prescribed with 15mg of Mirtazapine today for anxiety and depression. Already on 40mg of citalopram and HRT. Not sure of this is going to be a good combo tbh but hoping the doctor I spoke to knows what she's talking about.

OddBallNumber5 · 28/12/2024 18:56

Does it make you eat more and therefore out on weight? Really don’t need to lose any more weight tbh

rubyslipperss · 28/12/2024 19:34

@OddBallNumber5 that's interesting- why have they started you on both ?
I have put a bit of weight on been taking it 9 days but I am eating normally now as opposed to feeling so anxious I couldn't eat . Trying to make healthy choices ( though a bit hard over Christmas!)
Mirtazapine has been ok - makes me relaxed at night . Still finding sleep difficult though without sleeping tablet - trying tonight without it . Other than that I've been a bit anxious during the day . But thats settling and I'd say the only other side effect is feeling really groggy . But I have fatigue anyway so difficult to tell what's what !

Hi all - I'm nearly two weeks in and feeling slightly less anxious but was surprised today that I feel more anxious than the last 2/3 days and a bit odd / disassociated.
I'm still not sleeping completely' naturally' with mirtazapine . I've had a few nights off zopiclone but Christmas was stressful - I have tapered down though to 1/4 tablet if I can't go to sleep .
I'm going to try valerian this week and got another 2 weeks off work at least so lucky in that respect so can have tired days but hate feeling tired and find days when I don't sleep really hard .
I'm looking for light at the end of the tunnel if anyone has any words of wisdom ! I have thought about going down to 7.5 of mirtazapine but I'm worried about doing this without my GP knowing . The 15 mg seems to relax me but just not enough to get to sleep !

I’ve just found this thread by searching as I’m new on mirtazapine and struggling today.

I started on 15mg for 2 weeks with occasional zopiclone and still didn’t sleep so am now about 12 days in to 30mg. I sleep most nights now I’m on 30mg, but like you have suddenly felt more anxious the last couple of days. I’ve become short tempered with adult DC and can’t be bothered to do anything. I had thought my anxiety and depression were improving on it until these last couple of days but I’m actually feeling scared today, without knowing why.

I’m desperately hoping this is a blip, especially now I’ve read your post from yesterday, and that we will both improve again quickly. Can anyone confirm this?

I'm due back at work on Monday and not sure I can if I feel like this, but can’t afford more time off.

@rubyslipperss magnesium worked for my insomnia for a few months but then stopped, might be worth a try? As I said 15mg mirtazapine didn’t help my sleep but 30mg has most nights. I sometimes take paracetamolin the night which seems to help as I get an uncomfortable back.

rubyslipperss · 02/01/2025 21:49

@Thatwasthenthisisbetter I felt ok again today so strange I guess some days are up and some days down . I'm going to have buy more time off but I'm lucky I can. Hard if you have to go to work feeling up and down but if you're sleeping better maybe it'll help get you into routine. It's meant to be more sedating on lower doses so good you are sleeping better in 30 mg .
I've got tinnitus as well so finding it hard to get off . I'll try the magnesium cheers .

Meant to say I also felt agitated for few days when first started so maybe it's going up in dose and hopefully will settle down for you .
We can keep each other company on this thread .

Just found this thread, I’m on sertraline
again just recently with an antihistamine for insomnia not really helping. My brain just doesn’t switch off and I find I’m catastrophying things that haven’t happened. I’ve also had melatonin didn’t work either! My GP mentioned changing to mirtazapine after new year. I have recently started a relationship after a messy divorce 5 years ago hence setraline initially. I’m trying to weigh up what to do as want have best version of me and none of the lack of libido, does mertazapine do so this too?

I don't really know about libido on it yet - mine is flat as a pancake anyway though - it hasn't made it any worse. So far it seems to have calmed my thoughts down a lot especially at night.

Can I ask for those of you that are on mirtazipine…I have been on this for almost 4 weeks now starting at 15mg then upping to 30mg after two weeks. At first it knocked my anxiety out cold which was brilliant. Felt tired but it does ease. But I do feel very low at the moment..can I ask if this is normal in just not sure what to expect?
i was previously on the hugest dose of Sertraline and it didn’t touch my anxiety one bit in fact i think it made it worse. So hoping this helps

HopingForTheBest25 · 12/01/2025 20:12

My dh has been on the 30mg of mirtazipine for over a week now, having had the 15 mg for 2 weeks before that and he's still crippled with anxiety and not sleeping!

hidinginthegarden · 12/01/2025 20:27

I'm sorry I didn't find this post when the OP was looking for support. Hopefully you are sorted now@rubyslipperss.
I'm in 15mg and it knocks me out and I've been sleeping really well for about 3 months now. When I started I felt lots better pretty quickly - almost like my brain would only let me open one tab at a time (brain wasn't jumping about so much). And I get 7/8 hours sleep pretty much every night. I'm also on hrt and get a bit anxious but it's no where near as debilitating as it was before.

Oh no sorry to hear that . I hope he's doing better soon - I guess it takes a few weeks to settle . I was told 6-8 weeks but best at 3 months . Im taking Kalms night to help with sleep on top of mirt.
