Experiences of A&E for self-harm injury?

Were you treated sympathetically? What happened? Did they make you have a psychiatric assessment?

I already have both a psychologist and a psychiatrist. The former already knows I’m struggling currently and has arranged a review with the latter for this week. Are they still going to make me have an assessment in A&E? Will they just accept that?

Hey, I recently went to minor injuries after self harming. The nurse was very kind and patched me up. I was due to see the doc from the mental health team later that week so they were happy to let me go. I said I was feeling ok ish.
hope ur ok, it’s really crappy when ur feeling like this but I totally understand

@Struggling33 how did u get on? Where u treated ok?

Struggling33 · 29/04/2024 21:57

Thanks for asking. In the end I got away with not telling them. I just said I cut myself on a broken glass (which is totally true) and nobody asked any more details.

I told my psychologist the full story today though and it was a very positive appointment. She seemed optimistic that there are lots of strategies we can use to better manage emotional dysregulation. I’ll tell psychiatrist tomorrow too.

@Struggling33 glad your ok. Have you done DBT before? Apparently that’s helpful, my psych is doing a referral for it but don’t really know much about it.

Thanks so much @AnotherCountryMummy .

@Struggling33 I have a PTSD diagnosis and am doing EMDR. I had the psychiatric review this morning and she thinks my emotional dysregulation is a result of trauma, so I’ll continue with treatment for that and review again in a month. Thanks for the suggestion though. I may mention it next time.

Different experiences :

sometimes kind (anaesthetic and stitches)

other times barbarically - no local and painfully stitched up with awful attitude from dr

… really depends on the day
