3 weeks on Citalopram and not feeling any better?

As title. I started on 10mg, then moved up to 15 and have now been on 20mg for the last 8 days, in total it’s just over 3 weeks since I started the 10mg.

I feel absolutely no different. I didn’t get any particularly horrible side effects, just a dry mouth for a week and a bit of nausea.

Shouldn’t I be feeling a difference by now? I’m perhaps a bit calmer (though hard to tell) but that’s it. I’ve got a review with my GP next week but I’m scared they just won’t work for me and I’ll have to go through the rigmarole of trying something else.

Has Citalopram taken a while to work for anyone else?

I've been on citalopram a number of times in the last 20 years. When I was at my lowest, it took 5 weeks for it to kick in enough to make a measureable difference to my mood. Other times have been quicker, but always a week or 2, and that's with starting at 20mg. Its only been just over a week at 20mg so may well improve once you've been on it a little longer.

I hope it starts to work better for you soon.

it was 4 weeks before we saw a glimmer of hope in DH, then he was a bit better every month up to 6 months. Keep going!

@Funshrubs im just behind you at 2 weeks - although only on 10mg. I had horrendous side effects until a few days ago. My anxiety has reduced a bit but prob only to what I was before starting the meds. They did make it worse to start with.

I have another post on here and the general consensus was that the magic number was 5 or 6 weeks.

seems we’ve got to hold on a bit longer..

I was prescribed this yesterday;the GP was very candid in telling me it could take 4-6 weeks before I start to see a difference and my symptoms could possibly worsen in the first few weeks.

Also 20mg is a standard dose. You were on a low dosage.

I’m on escitalopram which is similar, and it took about 7 weeks for it to start working properly. I woke up one morning and just felt good for the first time in a really long time, and I knew it had worked! It’s worth sticking with for a bit longer, but if you don’t feel better after 8 weeks then maybe they’ll switch you onto something else.
