Propranolol

Could people tell me please share their experiences of taking propranolol every day. I have just been prescribed this for anxiety- was prescribed it after a telephone appointment with dr. Been feeling pretty anxious for a while but recently it’s been getting worse. Dr said I can take these as and when I need them but I just have this feeling of dread and panic most days, not enough to stop me living my daily life but certainly making me feel a horrible way that I don’t want to feel. Does anyone take this daily and feel it has helped?
thanks

I have been taking it daily and it definitely helps! I also take an anti depressant but the propranolol works within 20mins to relieve symptoms. When I feel my heart racing a little I take some and it all settles down. It really does help.

Marasme · 04/06/2023 22:08

not daily.
but i always have a pack in my purse when i feel the anxiety rise.
I mostly manage to keep it down that way.

Iris1976 · 04/06/2023 22:09

Yes I take these daily and they do help,I'm definitely catastrophies less and find leaving the house a little easier,I take 40-80mg a day.

Hopeitsallok · 04/06/2023 22:10

Thank you for your quick replies 🙂 - I’m thinking I’ll maybe take it daily for a week and see if it makes any difference to how I’m feeling

I've just started and gone from feeling panicky to pretty ok. Ive only needed one per day but just knowing it is there helps. I have been taking mine as soon as I wake up in the small hours to then combat the anxious thoughts that then build irrationally and find that works.

Hopeitsallok · 04/06/2023 22:16

Thanks everyone, I really appreciate the advice

I take 40mg daily due to Graves’ disease so my anxiety is high. I find it really helps, especially in certain situations such as driving. Never ever had an issue driving before but now it’s so bad I feel dizzy. Took 30 mg today and drive for three hours. Pleased with the results

littleblackno · 04/06/2023 22:19

I don't take it daily but it's been a total game changer in managing anxiety and just makes everything easier when I do need it.
I've been on other meds in the past which worked in a different way. Propranolol is pretty instant and takes away the panicky feeling meaning it doesn't ever then escalate as it used to.

TwoBlueFish · 04/06/2023 22:21

My DH takes it daily and has for several years. It works for him most of the time although he still gets anxious sometimes.

ChocolateTea · 04/06/2023 22:21

I take one every morning, and yes it helps. I then take up to three additional in the daytime, depending on whether I’m having an anxious day. Today I took two, most days I only take the morning one. My GP encouraged me to take one every morning so that I started every day a little more on an even keel and more able to make a decision as to whether I needed more through the day. It’s helped immensely.

Hopeitsallok · 04/06/2023 22:22

Can you have alcohol whilst taking it? I don’t mean loads but a glass of wine?

OP posts:
ChocolateTea · 04/06/2023 22:28

Yes, I do. I can have a glass of wine in the evening without an issue. I’m not a big drinker tbh, one or two glasses max once a week or so, but I don’t have an issue with it.

Cas112 · 04/06/2023 22:33

Really really really helped me

ChocolateTea · 04/06/2023 22:35

And to add to previous posters, propranolol changed my life. I was prescribed it after a breakdown, and it has been incredible. I only take 10mg every morning and then as needed, but it’s a complete life changer for me. I’ve been on it about 6 years now.

Bunce1 · 04/06/2023 22:43

I’m really pleased to have stumbled on to this thread. I sometimes feel very anxious/paranoid, I can feel
it rising and I know it’s irrational. Some small thing can trigger it and my mind starts to race ahead of me and I begin to feel very low. These feelings come on fairly quickly and can take a few days to pass. It’s not hormone related/PMS. I can recognise my triggers and do a lot better than I used to but I still feel sometimes overwhelmed with anxiety and feelings of self loathing.

could propanadol help me?

op sorry to hijack the thread. I hope you feel better soon and take this medicine, sounds like it could be amazing.

Hopeitsallok · 04/06/2023 22:47

@ChocolateTea I’m so glad that this has been such a help to you.
@Allfizzandfun well done on the driving 😊

Honestly, even just reading all these comments has made me feel so much better and positive. Dr appointment over the phone wasn’t ideal, would rather have spoken face to face. You have been a tremendous help.

There was a period when I took it daily 3 x a day.
It caused tinnitus, it’s listed in the possible side effects.
I was on it for several months but did wean off it when circumstances changed. I restarted it during covid and the more I took, the louder my ears rang! I do still take it but only on the mornings I work, then as and when needed. sometimes I have to take one at night if my head won’t switch off and let me sleep.

Hopeitsallok · 04/06/2023 22:50

@Bunce1 no need to apologise, I hope this thread proves helpful. I would phone your GP; from what others are saying it sounds like this would be something that could make a difference.

I take it. Sometimes I have none in a day if I’m feeling ok. On a bad day the doctor said it’s ok to take up to 4 tablets 3x a day so 120mg. It definitely helps knowing

I have that crutch to help if I start to feel I’m spiralling.

thelengthspeoplegoto · 04/06/2023 23:10

@Bunce1 do you have heart palpitations? It's my understanding that this is what propranolol is used for.
It's helped me for treatment of panic attacks. I take it when I need it.

jayhoo · 05/06/2023 00:49

I take 80 mg daily slow release. I used to take as and when like many others but the 20-40 min wait for it to kick in became intolerable. This suits me better and gives me the confidence to go through my day without worrying that I might encounter something I can't deal with - very prophylactic

Mummy04children · 05/06/2023 09:25

I take 8 tablets a day, side effects were awful as I always felt tired and dizzy but over time it stopped. They do help me (I have serve anxiety) but not 100%, they take the edge off but a lot of it you got to control yourself. Do breathing excises and count to 10. Hope this helps

SameKeyThough · 05/06/2023 16:04

Slightly off topic sorry but does anyone taking propranolol exercise regularly? I have been on it (80mg slow release) for the past year and a half following a breakdown (alongside many other drugs) and at some point would like to restart running as I used to runabout 5k every other day. Now I find I get very breathless and dizzy and think it might be the propranolol.

I have exercised regularly since being on it - ran marathons in 2018 when I was on it. I’m no where near that level now (thanks to covid) but can run 5k a couple of times a week and swim without too much issue. I am only on 10-20mg a day though?

Hungrybirds · 22/07/2023 16:46

anyone had any side effects with taking proponol I’ve been prescribed 40mg
