I am absolutely fuming about this video game called "Blinded by Fear" that my daughter stumbled upon. It is a horror game that involves players being immersed in a dark and creepy environment, and it is filled with grotesque and disturbing imagery. How on earth is this supposed to be suitable for children?!

My daughter was absolutely traumatized after playing this game. She has had nightmares for weeks, and she even started to develop a fear of the dark. I cannot believe that game developers are creating such inappropriate and harmful content and that parents are allowing their children to play it.

As a mother, I am appalled that this kind of game is even available to children. We need to stand up against this kind of violence and gore in our society. We cannot allow our children to be exposed to such harmful and inappropriate content.

I urge all parents to be vigilant about what their children are playing and to ensure that they are not exposed to this kind of horror. We need to protect our children and ensure that they are not subjected to unnecessary trauma and fear. This game is simply unacceptable, and we must do everything in our power to put an end to it.

parents are allowing their children to play it.

Aren’t you one of those parents though? Perhaps other parents are as naive as you were initially and don’t know what their children are watching.

janef81 · 01/03/2023 16:21

Yes you are right. I'm angry at myself and also the kind of developers who make these games.

If you are genuinely advising parents on MM why are you warning parents weeks after you found out?

Timeforabiscuit · 01/03/2023 16:24

But this is a game on Steam, and it has an obvious title, it's very clear it's a Sci fi horror game.

Have you done any parental controls on devices?

What’s the problem with making this sort of game? Presumably it’s aimed at adults who are perfectly capable of making their own choices. Up to parents to make sure their kids aren’t playing inappropriate games, surely?

Why is your child able to download scary games on Steam?

Or is this a lame ad campaign?

Certainly sounds like it! How old is your dd, op, and what age is the game aimed at?

janef81 · 01/03/2023 16:37

My daughter is 12 years old, and she is at an age where she is interested in exploring new games and experiences. We have set up parental controls on her devices to prevent her from accessing inappropriate content, but clearly this game has slipped through the cracks.

That's what I thought too.

OP, if this is genuine - obviously your young DC isn't the target market for the game. Didn't you think the name was a bit of a giveaway?

Fancysauce · 01/03/2023 16:40

You let your kid play it though. You're the one to blame for allowing her access to content she's not old enough for.

You can't demand an end to all games that might upset your child. That's crazy.

You're supposed to be 13 to set up a Steam account. I didn't take parental controls off here until my kids were 15.

The only problem here is you.

PoloFruit · 01/03/2023 16:45

The problem isn't the game.
You need to set up parental locks on steam and get her to ask you before she pays to download games.

PoloFruit · 01/03/2023 16:47

But as others have said this feels like a crap ad attempt for a tiny indy game.

janef81 · 01/03/2023 16:48

I have set up parental controls and vett games for my daughter. I thought this game was fine based on the game developer's description. However, this game has lied about its contents and is not appropriate for children.

Interned, blind and alone. Fulfil your contractual obligation to the corporation that owns you. Your vision, modified by a cybernetic LiDAR device, is the only way to investigate the ANIMA, an abandoned futuristic mining facility with a dark secret...and even darker horrors.

The description is clear that this is a dark Sci fi horror (and so do the reviews) and the title is called blinded by fear and the steam tag is horror.

What else do you need to be told to realise that this is a horror genre apart from the clear description, reviews and name?

QuillBill · 01/03/2023 16:55

I mean you don't even have to read the description! The title is enough.

YellowDots · 01/03/2023 16:58

Not everything has to be suitable for children. The world is not a giant soft play centre. People are allowed to develop things that are for adults. Even Mumsnet has its own vibrator.

Well that is your fault, not the game creators.

TellSomeoneElse · 01/03/2023 17:07

Sounds like this is on you OP.

janef81 · 01/03/2023 17:13

I really don't think you understand. My daughter is mature enough to play most games.

This game is seriously problematic. It should really be removed from steam. I don't think I can fully describe why. My daughter is seriously disturbed.

OP posts:
gwenneh · 01/03/2023 17:17

We understand. We just don’t agree.
You are the one who allowed an under-13 to have a Steam account.
You are the one who doesn’t appear to understand that parental controls are not total and complete on any site, let alone one with independent content creation.
You are the one who didn’t read the clear description, which someone was helpful enough to post and which makes the theme of the game very clear.
You are the one who needs to handle this, not demand the rest of the world change to accommodate your issues.

BellatrixLestrangesHeatedCurlers · 01/03/2023 17:20

We used to play (and get nightmares from) Silent Hill and Resident Evil. Character building!!

Yes and all the 18s should be removed from Netflix too in case your child watches them.

WonderingWanda · 01/03/2023 17:33

Have you ever checked with Common Sense Media op?

I can't find a game called blinded by fear on there but there is one called F.E.A.R which sounds like the one you described and is an 18 so I don't really understand why you allowed your daughter to play it.
