Hi I'm starting a new antidepressant called mirtazapine and my doctor was explaining it has a sedative in it to help you sleep at night so it's made me worry, Are you still able to get up to see to your baby/child in the night when you are on mirtazapine?

I'm on 45mg per day. I haven't had any issues and the dog generally succeeds in waking me up when he wants to.

Hi Dani, I think it took just a little under 4 weeks for me. I was previously on a very high dose of Venlafaxine, which I had to be weaned off (that was horrible). I also had very strong side-effects from the Venlafaxine if I was ever a slight bit late taking a dose, which is not something I have experienced with the Mirtazapine. I have to say that I am happier with this medication.

I'd say that it was about 4 weeks for me.

Best wishes to you.

Mostly used for anxiety and it's awful.

Weight gain is unreal.

Ilovegoldies · 29/08/2023 19:38

It took around a week to feel better after taking them again.

LadyFlumpalot · 29/08/2023 19:40

Oooh it helps you sleep, would take mine and be out in minutes. I slept normally though, would still wake up to the kids. Be warned though, until you get used to it you will be groggy as all anything for the next day.

Ahhh bollocks, zombie thread. Hope someone else finds my response useful though!

I love it. I was on 30mg for years but went up to 45mg after a particularly awful time.

The sedative effect particularly in the first few weeks was bad (won’t lie, I took time off of work) but it wears off. I could still wake if needed but felt drowsy. The lower doses tend to be more sedating but not for everyone.

I really believe that it saved my life and have no intention of coming off of them.

TheShellBeach · 30/08/2023 14:32

I've been on 45mg for ages and it works really well.
I take it two hours before I go to bed.
Yes to the appetite, though! That's not a good thing, but I'm scared of coming off them, as I don't want to be horribly depressed and anxious again.

I think it was at the higher dosage. I started at 30 and then went up to 45. I'm really sorry to hear about your symptoms, they sound grim. May be worth checking with your GP or pharmacist that everything's OK. Hope you get it sorted soon. x
