Hi all
So my uncle has a diagnosis of schizophrenia- he's had it his whole life. My grandmother (his mum) is not at all well and is wanting to buy him his own house before she passes. He currently lives with her and has for many years.
The trouble is that she doesn't see the extent of his difficulties; he lived on his own briefly before, but in a matter of months he had self neglected and was in a terrible state, and very vulnerable financially and emotionally. He has no idea how to manage his money or live on his own.

I am really concerned about her buying this place for him because I don't think he has mental capacity in relation to budgeting etc, as well as a number of other things. He is actively hearing voices, cutting himself, etc. The cmht either aren't interested or aren't informed.

Are there solicitors that specialise in mental health? Just wondering if we need to seek proper legal counsel before this is explored further

You could start with a social worker and a mental capacity assessment and explore the option of having a lasting power of attorney for health and well being and or finances if he has capacity to make that decision at this time (do you think he understands his difficulties?)

If he doesn't have capacity for this decision then I would have a look here (www.rethink.org/advice-and-information/rights-restrictions/mental-health-laws/mental-capacity-and-mental-illness/) and seek some specialist advice
