My gp wants me to switch my ads as I've gained so much weight with mirtazapine I'm on 45mg I'm terrified of changing over has anyone done this?

My sister gave up 15 mg a day of mirtazapine easily. No problem

I think being 4 stone overweight must be a concern for your health.... but I would come off mirtazapine slowly

Mirtazapine was hellish for me too - the weight gain again, so i was happy to drop it. I went straight to Venlafaxine with no issues. I guess it’s different for different people.

My dh did this and has been on Citalopram 30mg since and says it’s the best drug he’s ever been on. He says he will keep taking it forever. With the M he was just putting tons of weight on and having sleep apnea.

Thanks everyone. Seems like weight gain is a huge issue with mirtazapine. Just want to get off it

The weight gain isn't inevitable, but to avoid it you need a lot of self control, a healthy diet, and to get used to occasional hunger, especially at first. I am borderline underweight now but it has taken some mental effort.

I've been really thinking about it and talking to DH. Despite the hunger, I do think overall that mirtapazine has helped me to be less anxious and more happy, so I don't feel like it's worth the risk of side effects right now to withdraw.

I do hate feeling stuck on something though!

On re-reading, that wasn't meant to be preachy by the way Blush sorry if it came over that way.

Not at all! Very grateful for you sharing your experience. How much are you on? I am on 15 mg. I think the antidepressant affects have worn off for me! Feeling really awful at the moment just a horrible lost lonely empty feeling.
Think i read too much on the mirtazapine withdrawal fb group. Horrendous stores about huge weight gain and withdrawal

Annabell46 · 28/02/2022 16:13

@Elderado my Dr suggested venlefaxine. I’m really worried about changing. Had a hellish time on sertraline which made things so much worse and caused insomnia. I’m on mirtazapine for sleep and citalopram. Still feel hellish and so depressed. The slightest drop in mirtazapine makes me feel awful. I’m scared to change to venlefaxine in case things get worse and another med doesn’t work for me. Also worried about weight gain. Which I know is ridiculous when I should be thinking of my mental health. But being slim is important to me.
I’m losing hope of ever feeling better.
Would you recommend it? Also can you drink on it as I do like a couple of glasses of wine.
I just dread trying another med that causes me distress.
Thanks

@Annabell46 - I've had a look at the group, and would take it with more than a pinch of salt. It's obviously going to be quite self-selecting, with people who have issues (either due to mirtazapine, or ones they themselves think are due to mirtazapine) much more likely to join a group like that. It seems to have some people with fairly extreme ideas (you should never see a doctor, only a naturopath or a herbalist!). Some of their "expert" advice articles also mainly seem to list source links that just go to other FB articles or random blog posts, rather than anywhere particularly credible appearing (to my lay person's eye at least). Of course mixed in will be some useful bits on how other people have coped with various issues they've come across while withdrawing.

Anyone had experience of changing from mirtazapine to citaliptam I’m currently taking 15mg of mirtazapine which worked great initially but now how severe anxiety again so gp has advised straight switch to citalipram 10mg
