Does my DD need to see Psychiatrist?

My 18 yr old DD is suffering severe anxiety & depression to extent not able to start University. She is not in position to get job & obviously no longer has school etc. She is very up & down - some days she seems almost normal but the next day unable to get out of bed to even clean teeth. She has previously had counselling for anxiety but was able to go to school, however this seems a whole other level. GP recommended CBT & we've just started with psychologist, although shes told him doesn't want to discuss anything that will make her feel worse.....
GP almost impossible to get hold of but does she need a psychiatrist? Also does she need medication - it was briefly mentioned but must admit I wasn't keen due to her age, but am I being silly?
I am at totally loss what to do so any help greatly appreciated.
Sorry so long. Many thanks!

A psychiatrist would try to give a diagnosis and prescribe medication. The GP can do this, it's just that a psychiatrist is more of an expert. I think medication is probably worth a try.

With regard to medicine, I think you start by asking yourself if the effects would be worse than all the symptoms she currently has - because even if they are nearly as bad that is still an overall win?

I think she needs to follow the advice of her doctor.

There are certain medications only a psychiatrist can prescribe. Anti psychotics for example can initially only be prescribed by the psychiatrist. After the psychiatrist has authorised them they send instructions to your gp to be added to your repeats.

If your daughter is so ill that she can’t get out of bed then I think it’s time to consider all the possible treatments including medication. She is an adult, how does she feel about medication?
