ADHD adult waiting list 3-4 years

Wondering if anyone can give any advice at all? I'm sorry if I've posted this on the wrong board.

I approached my GP for a adhd referral after my sister was diagnosed and I'm concerned that DD1 may also have some ADD traits. I'm 34 and suffer with severe anxiety and bouts of depression and some other comorbid conditions.

My hope was that I would potentially have the option to be medicated which might help me in day to day life but GP has said that will definitely not be an option at my age, likely I will be given some coping strategies.

I'm based in greater Manchester and received the referral letter today stating that the waiting time for diagnosis is 3-4 years.

Has anyone else been in this position, I know about the right to chose but apparently I'm not eligible as in greater Manchester.

Is it worth going private? Does anyone have any recommendations as to where to go and is it likely that I will be medicated?

My Sister had a 12 month wait from referral to diagnosis and has been told she will have the option to be medicated, she is also in greater Manchester.

I don't know if there is any point in doing the referral if there will be no option for medication. Can anyone shed any light?

Thanks so much

There’s no reason why you couldn’t be medicated at your age. But GPs are not knowledgable about adult ADHD - I think that’s the issue.

I went private and getting the diagnosis was great. However, my GP hasn’t accepted the diagnosis and has referred me into NHS psychiatry and essentially back on to that waiting list.

However, I know others have had much more success with their GP. So I still think it would be worth you going private if you can afford it. And then maybe changing GP and asking them to take on shared care.

Thanks so much for the reply @ATieLikeRichardGere

I just feel like I've been fobbed off a bit by my GP. I'll look into private and see where I come up. Thanks so much
