DS thinks he is ready to talk to someone but who?

He's always been opposed to talking to anyone (he doesn't think he needs any help) but today, after a horrible outburst this morning and DH, normally placid and gentle, insisting that he seeks some help, DS has said that he is doing some research on line.

I'd like to direct him to some good places to go for help. He's 19. Where should he start?

TIA

Well what's the problem for a start? Is he depressed? Anxious? Drinking problem? Drugs? In an abusive relationship?

Is he in education or employment?

If in education, there may be college counsellors available. If in employment, is there an Employee Assistance Programme? I had 5 sessions of counselling through my work EAP and found it incredibly useful for clearing the fog in my head, even though I was cynical to start with.

thanks for the replies.
He is in employment but only a tiny set up so no support available there.
He is unhappy, angry, over weight, has some OCD, fallen out of love with his favourite sport that was his whole life, desperate for a girlfriend but has a low level of Aspergers which doesn't help with friendships / relationships etc.

I love him so much and he is a lovely, selfish, wonderful, lazy, amazing, opinionated, funny, pig headed, clever young man. Everybody loves him.

He is now saying that he doesn't need help, doesn't want to call anybody. I think he might engage better if he can do it online to start with.

Has he thought about working with a personal trainer? Would help with the weight, finding a new sport(I only started boxing because my PT was crazy about it and used to spar with me at the end of a workout,) might even help him socially too.

After failing miserably with CAMHS, a GP friend suggested we paid for a private consultation at the Priory so that the psychiatrist could advise what approach was best. It was expensive but worth it. DD was also 19 at the time.

The other thing I found helpful was the Young Minds charity.

Thank you both for the posts.
We got him a PT a few years ago but he didn't really engage (he has dyspraxia which doesn't help when it comes to physical exercise).

We have a Priory near us so I have contacted them and I'm also all over the Young Minds website; there is some really helpful information on there.

If he contacts his gp he'll be put in the steps to wellbeing programm with a weekly phone call from a therapist.

It's not the greatest but it is helping my 19 year old dd whose been struggling with stressful work and also long term eating problems

Online counselling?
My DH does this for a living and works a lot with young people...
Counselling doesn’t have to be ridiculously expensive (but I suppose it depends on who you get and your budget).
Look at the Counselling Directory or the BACP website.
Many counsellors see people in person still.
Also, trainee counsellor ms often charge very little (and are very close to graduating so are just as good as a qualified person, for the most part)

You should have a local IAPT service, he can self refer to this, don't need a GP referral. They will work with mild/moderate depression and anxiety disorders inc OCD/PTSD/GAD etc.

They offer courses and online programs as well as 1:1 CBT

thank you all. DS has changed his mind; he doesn't want to talk to anyone after all Sad.

I've given him lots of links, website addresses and suggestions and all I can do now is wait and see huh?

I hope he is able to face his demons soon, op. Your support will mean a lot to him Flowers.
