Venlafaxine apathy/lack of motivation

Hi folks, I have been on this drug a long time and find that I just can't be bothered doing a lot of things. I swear it's the medication. Had anybody else had this side effect? I have found several articles in medical journals which say antidepressants DO cause apathy and I have shown them to my psychiatrist and GP who both denied it. They weren't interested in reading the articles and said it's my condition causing the apathy and lack of motivation. But if that's the case then it means the medication isn't working? I DO find it helpful for anxiety but I feel flat, emotionless and empty on this drug. Tried all the others, fluoxetine, fluvoxamine, paroxetine, citalopram, sertraline, mirtazapine and lofepramine, all useless. Venlafaxine is the only one that works. I deteriorate with dose reductions. And please don't mention CBT, I've had loads of that and it just didn't do it for me. Thanks for reading x.

May I suggest, if you're female, you get your thyroid checked.
Exactly the same happened to me.
A few years on Venlafaxine and my energy levels just dropped. Turned out to be my thyroid.
Good luck

Yep I feel the same. Amitriptyline worked ok for me, but I prefer not being on medication because of the apathy and other symptoms that are similar.

Hi op I’m exactly the same. I was prescribed it for my anxiety and OCD, diagnosed November 2016.

I was literally at the stage where I was mopping myself out of the door, house was spotless, I was organised.
Now- I’m living in a shit tip and it upsets me so much because I know it’s these tablets.

I’m on 225mg daily. I take the 150mg very early am usually around 4/5 and the 75mg at around 8pm. I also have horrendous insomnia and fibromyalgia.

I absolutely believe what you are saying and it’s horrible.

@Zoflorabore @Immigrantsong I am so glad the two of you have come along and shared your experience! Thank you. I just KNEW it wasn't me. @LoveSatsumas I had by bloods checked, everything was ok, thyroid, not anaemic etc.
