Sertraline - is it meant to make you incredibly sleepy?

Just started (last Wednesday) Sertraline and on GP's advice am only taking 25mg.

I have noticed increased, intense anxiety which borders on a panic attack, but this only lasts about 15 minutes. The thing that's really surprising me is how utterly sleepy I feel! Ironically, I am taking it for chronic anxiety which is causing insomnia. I can barely keep my eyes open! I actually had to have a sleep in my car at lunchtime!

Has anyone else experienced this?

Yes all normal I found taking them an hour or so before I went to bed helped. Once your settled on them that should stop did for me anyway.

I felt very relaxed and sleepy shortly after starting to take them. It evened out pretty quick.

I took them just before bed last night but have been pole-axed all day after sleeping a good night's sleep (for once!).

Hi, it's part of getting used to them, once you've figured out what the best time is to take them, side effects will taper off.

I've actually had the opposite effect. It wakes me up! So I have to take it in the morning. I think it effects everyone differently though, and I've heard from a few people that they take it at night instead.

I am on day 12 of taking 25mg and am utterly exhausted with the lack of sleep! I am really hoping this is a side effect that will wear off soon. The doctor said to start on 25 to begin with and increase to 50mg, but I am scared to do this in case it makes the insomnia worse!

haverhill · 13/11/2018 11:40

Oh no, Nutty. Are you taking them first thing in the morning?

Yes I am Confused

I'm on my third week and get insomnia some nights rather than sleepiness, but I think any of the other side effects have now worn off.

I would echo PPs and suggest taking it at a different time of the day for a little while to see if that helps

ps I wanted to say, good on you for admitting you needed a little help, and if it means that taking Sertraline makes you feel better, than so be it. Never, ever, feel judged. You've made the first step for a happier, better feeling you. Good luck and hang in there.

Thanks, Doing, that's really kind of you.
I have been struggling along for a long time. I know loads of people who take ADs so don't feel embarassed, just a bit annoyed with myself for getting into such a state!
