Bipolar- extremes of mood in one day?

Hello. I’m wondering if anyone has experienced bipolar disorder where they experience both depression and mania in quick succession?
If that isn’t sounding like BPD what other condition could it be?
This person is very very impulsive as well, aggressive often and generally known to be a “bit of a nut job” in that he seems not to care about consequences etc. He also has severe self doubt, worthlessness and sleeps an awful awful lot. Pushes away anyone who tries to get close. Keeps family and friends only knowing the “fun side”...

Help much appreciated. Thanks.

Extremes of mood in one day wouldn't fit diagnostic criteria for bi polar or even cyclothymia. Frequent mood swings is usually more emotional dysregulation which can be related to lots of things; personality disorder, ADHD..

Thank you. It kind of reassuring that it could be emotional based and I know he has emotional difficulties stemming from disruptive childhood. He now has some more support and has managed to tell people at work that he is struggling which is huge.
He definitely isn’t on drugs. But I appreciate it could sound similar.

Thank you.
