SH scars- what to tell the children?

For those of you with SH scars- what do you tell your children? They were made mostly when I was a teen so they are very old but still visible. If it were an adult I would simply say 'I had mental health issues as a teen' and leave it at that, but what do you say to a 5&7 year old? So far I just shrug them off and change the subject, and I guess I'd explain it when they are older. What do others do in this situation?

Well, I believe you should always tell children the truth, but at their level. You could just say they're scars from cuts you had. You don't need to go into details about how you got the cuts.

Sometimes I do say 'it's just damaged skin' which is fine at the time, but a few months later they will ask again. If there is no better explanation then I guess I will leave it at that.
