I have PND, can you take the tablets and still breastfeed?

Doctor didn't make it clear to me this morning.

He has prescribed me Sertraline. Pharmacist says it crosses over to breast milk and only for short term use.

Don't know what to do as ds will not take a bottle.

Feel like it is just another thing to cry about!!

I think sertraline is ok. Wouldn't one of breast feeding support groups know, or NCT?Also if you do a search on here you may get an answer

I took Sertraline for PND and I breastfed DS1 with no problems while on it. I took them for 6 months

I hope you start to feel better soon mower.

Why the double post!? Phone gp this afternoon and ask. Or NHS direct, although they are pretty crap IME

kellymom on bf whilest using anti'ds

Mower, I assume you want to bf, rather then ff? If so, then indeed starting ff would probably make things worse.
Anywya, hope you find an answer on kellymom, if your medication isn't mentioned, maybe print it out, and take to gp and see what they can do!
Also, are you going to get councilling? Often the treatment seems to be purely with medications, rather then talking about the problems, etc..
best of luck

Sertraline fine. Been taking mine for over a year now and been b/feeding the whole time.

Sertraline is considered okay for b/feeding.

Sertraline is the safest AD to take whilst breastfeeding. It does cross over into breastmilk but at a very low level (as does alcohol and caffeine). I think general opinion is that having a depressed mother is worse for an infant than a tiny dose of Sertraline.

If you need it, take it. And keep on BF. It's good for both of you.

I took sertraline from when I was 12 weeks pregnant with DD and breastfed her until she was 10 months.

We are both fine .

It did make me feel sick for about a fortnight, but then I started feeling better and within a month felt the gloom had lifted.
