Stick with SJW or go back to citalopram which I know works.

Anxiety/mild depression, I had been on citalopram for 5 years off and on. I had been pill free for 6 months when I noticed I was starting to slip down again, without ignoring it I thought I would try St John's Wort, been on it for 5 days now and feeling a little worse, I really do not know what to do for the best whether continue with SJW or stop and start taking citalopram which I know works for me.

I have had 2 weeks off work, and due to go back on Tuesday, its a heavy meeting based week where I need to be at my best.

Just want to feel better :(

Anyone with any advice would be fantastic.

Why not take citralopram if it works? I've just started and I feel so much better. Just because St. John's wort is herbal dosnt make it better!

Hi, I'm on SJW and if you get the dose right it does work and doesn't have nearly so many side effects (although there are a few contra indications, notably hormonal contraception and hrt). If you were going to give it a fair trial you need to allow at least two weeks to feel the effects.

The trouble is, a couple of years ago the EU banned herbal remedies that make medicinal claims unless they have a medicinal licence. This means that the SJW on sale now is sold as a 'food supplement' and is not available as a standardised dose - i.e. you don't know how much you are taking (I stocked up while it was still available). While there have not been any reported problems from taking too much, it's likely you wouldn't be taking enough to have any real effect.

If you have had two weeks off work I would assume you have been to the doctor. Have you discussed it with them? If not, you really should, especially if you are on any other medication.

I hope you feel better soon Flowers

Thanks for your replies, sorry I meant I had been off for 2 weeks with the Easter Holidays, not because of this, I think the being off and having too much time to think hasn't helped.

Citalopram does work but it makes my sex drive zero

I was in a much worse state before when I took citalopram and was hoping I could take something easily available to ward it off.

If you've got a five year history of depression, I wouldn't mess around with SJW, especially in the absence of standardised doses. It's much better to knock it on the head early. But I hear you completely about the loss of libido. That sucks.

There are different ad's that do not affect libido. Maybe you should discuss about this with your gp.
