Citalopram as a second antidepressant/taking more than one antidepressant

I take mirtazapine and clozapine. My psychiatrist has suggested taking citalopram on top of the other 2.

Does anyone else take more than one anti-depressant, surely they do the same thing?

I am sure they know what they are doing. I know different AD's can work in different ways so maybe they are wanting to help you by treating different parts of an illness differently. Citalopram is often prescribed by gp's and is a different family of drugs from mirtazapine.

Hi, I'm on mirtzapine (which my excellent psychiatrist prescribed for anxiety: I think it's a wonder drug) and citalopram (which she prescribed at the same time to pull up my mood). And I have no plans to give up either. I was quite badly clinically depressed when I started, bcs of random awful stuff (health problems). Few years on, I think the combination really saved me from something even more awful.

Thanks MrsCanute, it's good to hear other people's experiences Smile Thanks HoopHopes, I suppose that explains why prescribe two.

I just wanted to hear people's experiences, I already have pretty unbearable side effects, but I'm told clozapine is non-negotiable.
