What do I say about my MH to prospective employers?

I was diagnosed with severe depression and anxiety in October. I was signed off work and subsequently resigned, as work related stress was the main cause of my illness.

I have seen a job advertised that seems perfect for me. The job is a change of career - much less stress, fewer hours and school hours only. I feel confident I can manage and it would a good start back into employment. I'm just worrying about what, if anything, I should say about my MH problems.

Before you've got the job? Depends whether your MH problems would affect your ability to do the job. If not, then if it was me in your position I'd say nothing, unless you need an employer to make reasonable adjustments to enable you to do the job. After you've got the job? I'd probably be truthful on any forms etc but wouldn't volunteer the information - unless I was likely to be needing time off etc for gp/psych appointments, counselling/therapy etc. Legally we shouldn't be discriminated against but in reality lots of us are so for me not worth the risk. Good luck with the application - sounds perfect (need to find something similar myself Smile)

Hi there,

Honestly I would say nothing but do be careful with yourself and not take on too much. Other people can be strict with their workload so why can't you (and me?!?!)

Learning to say no is hard but don't put yourself at a disadvantage for your perfect job due to previous mental health problems.

Many people are enlightened about mental health however unfortunately many also are not.

xx

Thanks! The application is in. Now I have to just cross my fingers and remind myself that even if I'm unsuccessful, just doing the application form was a big step forward Grin
