Depends what it says on the pot/bottle and who made it.
I think 'standardised extract' is the most pure form, stronger than many cheaper versions.
Fantastic herb, very useful for lots of things other than depression, which is why I use it on and off -have just started taking it as a gall bladder tonic.
Do check and see if you're supposed to have a 2 week break every 6 weeks - some herbs should only be used for 6 weeks without the 2 week break and remember it can cause sensitivity to sunlight. *think St Johns is OK to use all the time.
Pretty plant, grows like mad in Wales, Welsh name for it: Y Fendigedig.
Glad it's helping and no nasty side effects!

I've got a bottle of these in the cupboard must start taking it. Mine is 'standardised extract' 300mg x 3 per day apparently but I'm a bit nervy about starting on that dose.

Do we take it with food or between meals? it doesn't say on my bottle.

SoleSource · 03/08/2012 20:49

Thank you for the replies.

The directions for use are - take with water. No mention of taking with food on my box.

No mention of taking a break either.

You couldvtry that dies Malory, 3 per day with each main meal.

Which brands have you each got or tried please .

I was on 450g but had to go down to the 250g per day as I'm on the pill and they contraindicate - but my friend who is a nurse reckoned I should be ok on the lower dose if I took it in the afternoon and my pill in the morning ( disclaimer I am not offering medical advice to anyone ).

I have found it very helpful to alleviate with low moods I found it did take the full 4 weeks to take effect though.

I bought it from Boots.

Hi Rookie

I noticed the 250mg dose today. Infact I brought them by mistake and had to change them. I wondered why they wrre a lower dose. I am almost at the end of week four and I do feel better.

Will I feel even more better with them after the 4 weeks or is that the peak effect and kinda stays like that.

Hard to say really solesource. I have been on it for about 3 months now I feel that I have a lot more ups than before.

I tried to come off for a bit when my friend warned me about the issue about taking it with the pool and noticed the difference fairly quickly ( started feeling tearful again)

I think its great stuff just keep taking it and see how it goes.

SoleSource · 03/08/2012 22:33

Jt is great stuff and I am alsi experiencing more ups than lows. Exciting ...

SJW is banned at some level in France. Hoping things do not get like that here.

After a bit of research I found that SJW max dose might be 1000 mg per day...

so you can take it if you're on the pill then? That's good, i thought it stopped the pill working all together but if it's ok at the lower dose i may try that.

SoleSource · 04/08/2012 09:55

You can ask nurse at GP surgery.

Nan don't take my word for it please - I don't want to be responsible for any accidents !

My friend says ( and she is medically trained) that what happens is that the SJW interferes with your bodies ability to process the pill, it inhibits it somewhat. At first she recommended I come off it which I did but then when she saw how I was she thought it would probably be ok if I took the pill first thing in the morning and the SJW late afternoon to space them out oh and I had swapped to the lower dose.

I would say that I take the pill to suppress periods because I have endometriosis rather than because of contraception also I am 42 so if I were by some miracle to get pregnant DH and I would be absolutely delighted therefore it's not a great risk for me.

NanBullen · 04/08/2012 18:49

ah ok thanks. does anyone know if i can take anything else that has a similar effect to sjw but doesn't interfere with the pill? Does fit b do anything?
