Do you use a St Jonhs Wort which works - what is the brand?

Have been using one from local healthshop, but it doesn't seem to be working. I know the dosage of the product changed recently, so can't get the high strength one.
I really need to know which brand to buy.
Feel so low, tearful, fed up with dh......

I've used different brands from Tesco's own to Boots own brand and have found them all fine. Remember they will only help with mild depression and their effect is quite subtle. If you feel they don't work you may need to talk to the doctor about anti-depressants.

Yes Kira and Perika are the best brands, Perika is the most potent and you can import it from the USA from i-herb. I found it brilliant stuff but you have to take enough of it. Usual dose is 3 a day but at one point I was taking up to 6. Do some research on the dosage because the one a day that is on the packets in this country is not enough. Research has been done using up to 6 a day so I felt safe taking it and I gradually built up the dose. I think each tablet contains 300mg of active ingredient and you need 900mg a day but do check this. Kelly's St Johns Wort web site is great for understanding more. It really picked me up and helped my sleep and anxiety issues. Will intefere with certain meds though such as contraceptive pill and warfrin.
It is less expensive to import from the USA than to buy in this country where it is very expensive.
I would say my depression was moderate and it was the only thing that made me feel better without awful side effects. Check out amino acid tharapy as well which I combined with the SJW, was very effective.

I use Kira Good Mood x 2 (450mg each) per day. I used the Kira 1 a day 1000mg for years until they were discontinued last year, but taking 2 Good Mood tablets seems to work just as well.

I've been using SJW off and on for about 14 years now and found that the Kira brand are the most reliable and effective - they always start to work within a few days.

I am using the Boots high strength one - it took about 28 days to take effect and it was like a light bulb going off in my head suddenly the world is a lot brighter.

I feel like I'm seeing the world in colour again instead of black and white! It's a very noticeable chemical "high", and I get rather hyper and buzzy for a few days, but it wears off quite quickly and I just feel comfortably normal and mostly content again Smile.

Thanks for your replies - it really helps.
LapsedPacifist, can I ask, Do you take the two tablets together, or one a.m and one p.m
Have bought some, and started taking.
Hope I feel like a happier person soon.

I would only ever get it from neal's yard as a tincture, but perhaps I'm unfairly prejudiced.

LapsedPacifist · 22/05/2012 14:15

I found it too complicated to calculate and measure out the liquid tincture Blush.

CrazyBabies, How are you feeling now? I actually take 2 tablets together, but that's more for my own convenience - I'm taking quite a lot of diferent types of medication ATM and find it easier to take it all at once whever possible. I would imagine that x2 per day is absolutely fine though.

Hi, thanks for all your useful information. LapsedPacifist I have been taking 1 in the morning and one in the afternoon. I seem to be feeling a lot better - I have been reading a great book about negative thinking and its really helping too.
