Having the merina coil whilst being treated for depression.

I'm taking Citalopram 20mg each day for depression and it's been working very well Smile

I am considering having the merina coil and I'm worried that it may lead to depression in the way the pill does. I never take hormones because of this as I know I'm prone to depression and badly fluctuating moods.

Has anybody had the merina fitted and been okay? Can it cause mood instability as well?

I didn't want to post this in family planning because I want specific experiences of having it fitted whilst being treated for depression.

I had a Mirena coil fitted for a while as I thought it would suit me due to having had problems with the Pill. I eventually had it removed after six months as I had continual spotting, bloating, sore breasts, mood swings and brain fog.

At the time I had it I wasn't on ADs so can't comment on whether it leads to depression. (I may have been depressed at the time it was fitted and not diagnosed). All I do know is I'm quite sensitive to synthetic progesterone which is why the Pill didn't suit me. The Mirena also has synthetic progesterone and is supposed to release a small localised amount of hormone.

I still believe the progesterone gets around the body though owing to the side effects I had.

Having said this, for a lot of people the Mirena works very well. Many people are fine and have no periods or any bad side effects on it. I just wasn't one of them.
