my DP was diagnosed at the start of his 20s (he's now 31), been hospitalised twice. he was acting strangely on Tuesday, beginning to get paranoid. emergency appointment with Dr, put on high dose of Olanzipan (zyprexa). he is now zombie like: glazed eyes, basically one up from -my understanding of- catatonic. very strange and scary. does anyone know, or have experience of psychosis? how long does it last? what triggers it? he's been under alot of stress lately and I imagine this has something to do with it. also, and I ask this tentatively because i'm not sure I want to know the answer, would having a baby be a bad idea?
Off to see his Doc tomorrow and will ask the same questions but thought i'd try here too.
Thanks.

I didn't want your post to go unanswered; hope it went well at the doc's?

OiVaVoi - your DPs illness must be very distressing for him and you. It sosunds like he should be getting some support - has there been no suggestion of a CPN or someone from the CMHT.

I think the statistics are that schizophrenia type illness is 1 in 100 at random and 25% risk if one parent has the illness, rising to 50% if both parents are affected. I am not 100% sure of these stats, but I am sure the GP will have answered your queries.

Apart from that though, I would think very carefully before having a child, as it sounds like you and your DP have enough to cope with, without the stress of a baby at this time in your lives.
