Does an increased dose in citalopram cause side effects again-feeling awful :(

Was on 10mg for 5 weeks and started to feel lots better but still felt quite anxious in the mornings so GP upped to 20mg fri. Saturday and today have felt horrible with stomach pains, the runs and horrible anxiety including spaced out 'not there' feeling which I find soooo distressing. Is it the meds or am I getting more ill????? Any advice please????

Really common side effects for this drug...suggest you talk to doc about it tomorrow am. Most GPs will phone you back if they have seen you so recently. 10mg is the smallest tablet but I think you can break them and maybe going up in smaller increments might suit you better...20mg -60mg is the most usual dose for people (except elderly) with anxiety/depression. Hope you are OK. Best wishes.

In my experience yes increasing dose does do this. Are you suffering with the same side effects you experienced when you started taking the citalopram initially? I would ring your gp althouh you may be told (as I was) that "it will settle down". Hope you feel better soon.

Thank you for your reassuring replies. Chocattack, they are the same side effects as when I started only more severe and I think it's the shock of going downhill so rapidly when I had been feeling much better. Feeling a bit better today despite another awful night of feeling sick and panicky. Seeing GP this afternoon so hopefully she can prescribe some diazepam to get me through this rough patch. Any idea how long it lasts? Think it was about 6-10 days when I first started. Hope it's not that long this time. Just want to feel well again!!! Thanks again ladies!

Honeymoonmum, I meant to say about diazepam last night - glad you're on the ball! I struggled badly with the side effects the last time I took citalopram (I've taken it twice) and had to stop taking it altogether I think within 3-4 weeks of starting and that was even with diazepam. Fingers crossed it won't be long for you. Hope gp appt went ok (and you got your diazepam prescription).

Citalopram - I was doing well with my anxiety and depression so started taking my 40mg every other day but increased to every day about 10 days ago. My anxiety is terrible, feel like I’m never going to get better. Had similar when starting Cit. Has anyone else experienced this and does it get better. Desperate

It does but they don't last as long. It'll happen when tapering off too.
