how much are you paying for your private counselling?

Just wondering wether £40 is reasonable.

I think thats about standard - although some people charge much (!) more than that. In the south East some cbt counsellors charge over £100 an hour!!!!!

It depends a bit on the type of therapy - for example is it counselling or is it cbt?

That's what I paid in Bristol for psychotherapy -worth the investment in yourself, seriously.

I pay £45 an hour (in the midlands). My psychotherapist supervises the training of other counselors.

pecialised counselling by a psychotherapist in London is at least £100ph. CBT by a psychologist is between £100 and £150ph. I didn't realise the prices were so much less out of london. These are the prices of those connected to a private psychiatric hospital in central london.

£40 sounds very reasonable to me. I have paid £45 with one who I didn't get on with abnd £55 with another who seemed very inexperienced to me though she had worked in the NHS for years but she made copious notes and then I discovered she had only just set up on her own and to make matters worse she kept getting the times mixed up! Am now seeing clinicsal psychologist on the NHS - only been once but hey she's free!

I'm in Hertfordshire and I am an accredited psychotherapist and teach it also. I charge between £10 and £50 for individuals - I keep low cost spaces available for those who can't afford it and for students in training to be therapists.

I paid £45 2 years ago (she was experienced) so £40 sounds good to me if the person has the skills you need.

I've never paid (apart from relate)- I've seen six different ones since I was 15 through various organisations- can you not get it on the NHS? Or am I missing the point?

saying that, Relate charge £40 a session, but they will reduce it if you are on a low income. So I'd guess that is pretty standard.

butter - glad you had better experience of nhs - however think much depends on where you are in uk. I got a social worker who says I can't talk to her about my life or emotions out of nhs and that was it! Think for some people they fall between too bad for gp 6 sessions person and not bad enough for mental health team (or as they told me today - they have no resources!! but that is not relevant for op post!)

Many therapists work on a sliding scale fee basis. Fees are usually around £40-£65 on average. Lower cost places may be available, and some organisations offer low fee schemes. I'm a therapist based in London, but I refer people throughout the UK as part of my work.

£100 per hour. Very qualified counselling psychologist.
