Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8 smile

Last thread was here
www.mumsnet.com/Talk/fasting_diet/4128689-5-2-Thread-94-Its-a-New-Year-a-New-Day-and-were-feeling-GOOD

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

(Let's not talk about the return flight. I'm predicting at least a 5kg gain!)

BaconAndAvocado · 20/08/2021 18:52

I've decide to forego fasting for a week and a bit. I've got a few nights out planned and a last minute short breakaway next week which will all cancel out any positives.

Will be back soon and on it 100%.
Good luck to all 🙂

harriethoyle · 22/08/2021 20:09

Anyone with me this week? I'm b2b tomorrow and Tuesday and a mini on Wednesday... 🤞

harriethoyle · 24/08/2021 07:22

@heregoes74 @veryactually @absolutelyknackeredcow @MazDazzle how are you all getting on?

I'm heading into day 2 of a b2b with packed lunch made and black coffee at hand...!

heregoes74 · 24/08/2021 08:31

Fantastic sv Harriet so close, I bet with only 2kg to go you are already very slinky 😁

I'm off all this week with DS so going to attempt a FD today but not going to beat myself up if I don't manage it, will just see what happens.

Have a great day everyone 😁

EATmum · 30/08/2021 09:14

Help me, I need some motivation. I've been doing this for about three weeks and the numbers on my scales literally haven't budged. I mean one pound. I've been exercising, haven't gone overboard on my 5 days and I've done fasting before and I know it works for me. Also, I can feel my body is stronger - just still as heavy! Any advice, motivation or tips on how to shift pounds when you're peri-menopausal. Thanks!!

BaconAndAvocado · 30/08/2021 15:23

Hi all, I’m planning on doing my first b2b starting tomorrow after a break and a 4lb gain 😫

EATmum I feel your pain.
I’m peri menopausal too and it’s proving so much harder to shift the pounds!

My advice would be to just stick with it, it will happen but will probably take longer than when you were in your thirties.

harriethoyle how are you getting on?

harriethoyle · 30/08/2021 15:45

Am b2b with you tomorrow @BaconAndAvocado! After a very indulgent bank holiday weekend.

NSV last week when my new jeans were a size 10 so that will get me back on the wagon Grin

OP posts:
BaconAndAvocado · 30/08/2021 15:48

I'm being thick.....what's NSV?

harriethoyle · 30/08/2021 16:21

@BaconAndAvocado Non-Scale Victory!

OP posts:
BaconAndAvocado · 30/08/2021 16:28

Ah I like that!!

Not sure I'll ever comfortably get back into my size 10 jeans.....maybe if they're from M and S as their sizing always comes up big on me.

Returning to my PT this week after her maternity leave. It's not going to be pretty 😂

harriethoyle · 30/08/2021 16:40

Hold on @BaconAndAvocado... I didn't say they were COMFORTABLE! GrinWink

I agree re M and S btw. I'm an 8 in vests and an XS in jumpers. I'm also 32ff... the two are mutually exclusive!

OP posts:
BaconAndAvocado · 30/08/2021 16:55

😂😂
All hail M and S!!

Re bra size, I recently had a proper fitting at M and S and went from a 34A to a 36C.

Seems that everything is bigger there!
.......and now I'm craving M and S choc chip cookies 🍪

absolutelyknackeredcow · 31/08/2021 08:40

Hello all
Logging back in after a very active holiday break but still a five pound gain !
@BaconAndAvocado I beat you 😂

BaconAndAvocado · 31/08/2021 08:50

absolutelyknackeredcow
It was very close 🤣

Just had my yoghurt and blueberries. No toast and biscuits........

Good luck everyone who’s —starving— fasting today.

BaconAndAvocado · 31/08/2021 08:51

Hmm, not sure why the double hyphen didn’t work on my iPad??

absolutelyknackeredcow · 31/08/2021 09:19

I'm hoping most of it will go very quickly ! Planning to be super good the next few weeks

heregoes74 · 31/08/2021 11:06

Morning All,

Back at it after a week off with DS, FD today and Thursday this week. I haven't weighed but I know the week off will have wiped off my first weeks' loss, so I'm basically back at the start - doh.....

Good luck to anyone else fasting today.

Just thought, what happened to BigChoc? Did she name change or leave?

absolutelyknackeredcow · 31/08/2021 11:37

I am fasting @heregoes74 .
Doing well so far..
Also doing Friday which I hate as a rule

heregoes74 · 31/08/2021 11:42

hope you have an easy FD absolutely I usually like a friday FD but this week I have a friend popping over for a drink (or 2)

What's on your menu today? I haven't had anything but tea yet, will have some chicken noodle soup and some extra chicken for lunch, then a HUGE turkey salad for dinner, possibly with a satsuma or some strawberries.

BaconAndAvocado · 31/08/2021 13:54

I'm finding my first FD in quite a few weeks not too bad.....so far!

Had yoghurt and berries for B
Pot of mango L
D will be a quarter portion of a Gousto prawn dish.

Ooops, had a sneaky bourbon earlier!

harriethoyle · 31/08/2021 14:55

I'm also joining the hungry club today... tuna thin for lunch was INHALED at 12 noon Grin

Not sure whether I'm doing curry or hot pot tonight but DH is away and I can't be bothered to cook just for me so it'll be a ready meal already in the freezer I suspect...

OP posts:
harriethoyle · 31/08/2021 19:40

Kitchen closing on 518. Really tasty sausage, bean and red pepper casserole from Aldi. Ate half and added 100g of new potatoes. Going to have second half for lunch tomorrow and tuna sandwich for pre-running club tea because there's no way I'll be able to run without having eaten supper and I won't be home until an hour before I need to leave...

@BaconAndAvocado @heregoes74 @absolutelyknackeredcow how has today been?

OP posts:
heregoes74 · 31/08/2021 19:53

All good here Harriet sounds like you've had a good food day Smile

I'm distracting myself starting to pack things away for what I hope is a house move before October 🤞 looking forward to food tomorrow although gonna try and go until lunch if I can as dh and ds want chicken fried rice for dinner tomorrow so won't have calories for 3 meals Shock

Hope other fasters are coping well...

absolutelyknackeredcow · 31/08/2021 19:56

Hi @heregoes74 @harriethoyle - kitchen closed on 500 cals here !
