Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8 smile

Last thread was here
www.mumsnet.com/Talk/fasting_diet/4128689-5-2-Thread-94-Its-a-New-Year-a-New-Day-and-were-feeling-GOOD

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Absolutely RAVENOUS @absolutelyknackeredcow - it's my own fault for front loading yesterday, means I have no extra calories to play with today! Am going out for another c25K to try and stop myself from eating one of the dogs...!

@TiredButDancing - honestly MOST of the time it is easier but this is definitely hard this week!

@harriethoyle - me too although work is busy so keeping me occupied. Trying to backload calories for later so I'm not to hungry going into the night

TiredButDancing · 03/08/2021 15:33

I have to fetch DS and do a few chores this afternoon. All fine except that it means by the time we finally get home, I expect to be ravenous!!! Taking an apple to eat on my way to collect him.

But mostly, today has been okay. I'm feeling pretty confident that I'll finish at slightly under 500.

I only lost 0.5kg last week so I do hope this week is better. Admittedly, I had a big night out on Thursday and seemed to be shovelling cakes and sweets in all weekend at various events so....

absolutelyknackeredcow · 03/08/2021 19:11

Kitchen closed on 630 on second day of b2b . It's been hard I won't lie

absolutelyknackeredcow · 03/08/2021 19:18

I'm hoping for a reasonable loss - or at least not a gain

harriethoyle · 03/08/2021 19:34

Kitchen closed at 491 here. Well done @TiredButDancing and @absolutelyknackeredcow - today has been a tough one!

Witchone1 · 03/08/2021 22:32

Finished at 630c today, not great but it's something. Hope tomorrow is better. Anyone doing FD tomorrow ?

absolutelyknackeredcow · 04/08/2021 07:42

It's a maintain from me - slightly gutted to be honest but mainly because it's been so hard this week.
Given that I have a few very eating heavy weeks coming up including a holiday that I wasn't planning on fasting on and I set my aim of meeting new target weight by end of September. It's only 3 pounds but need to be realistic about how hard it will be to get there

BaconAndAvocado · 04/08/2021 08:48

Witchone1
I had planned to do a FD today but having just done DS2's paper round (virtuous mother moment) I came home ravenous at 7:45 so had a bigger brekkie.

Aim to do b2b tomorrow and Friday.

Good luck all fasters today 😊

BaconAndAvocado · 04/08/2021 08:51

absolutelyknackeredcow
It's so downheartening when you don't lose (or put on in my case recently).

Keep going, you'll get there.
I've had to remind myself to be realistic and accept that it's going to take longer.

TiredButDancing · 04/08/2021 11:55

Nice work @harriethoyle. I closed at 480 officially. But I definitely did a bit of tasting while making supper for DS and DH so probably 500ish. Phew. I didn't get around to breakfast until 10:30 today so it was ridiculous but I will have a v light lunch and a normal dinner so I'm not too stressed.

Well done to anyone doing b2b!

harriethoyle · 04/08/2021 12:01

I'm back to my usual weight this morning - going to take it easy today and tomorrow (although it's my dad's birthday and I have made him a chocolate fudge cake so I will have a slice of that later!) because I've got a heavy weekend coming up with a boozy friend staying and a lunch party on Saturday. Then try and repair the damage next week... might do b2b and a third FD. We'll see!

OP posts:
absolutelyknackeredcow · 04/08/2021 14:09

Fell off the wagon today following my maintain
Will get back on it next week
Thanks for your kind words all

Witchone1 · 04/08/2021 14:16

Its heartening to see this thread. After losing some weight, it plateaued so close to my target. As expected gained some after holiday and now the motivation is lost. FD today and hoping that it will help stop mindless snacking and sugar craving this week, that's all!!

BaconAndAvocado · 05/08/2021 16:47

Just scoffed a bag of ready salted crisps 🙄
Still got 300 cals left but it was a moment of weakness and such a waste.....
Just dinner now and NO SNACKS ON THE SOFA TONIGHT!!!? (Unless they're a glass of water or a herbal tea 😂)

harriethoyle · 05/08/2021 20:27

@Witchone1 just take it a FD at a time and you'll soon be back in the groove

OP posts:
BaconAndAvocado · 05/08/2021 20:44

Kitchen closed at 538 today.
Been harder then usual today, not sure why.
Second FD tomorrow.....

Witchone1 · 05/08/2021 21:54

Thanks@harriethoyle, you are right. I was eating 650 - 750c on FDs as I was finding it too hard to stick to it and still managed a bit of loss this week which was surprising. Yes, should take a FD at a time to get back to track🤞

BaconAndAvocado · 06/08/2021 09:35

FD2
Had a really good 99 cal breakfast.
1 plum baked in the oven for 15 minutes, remove then add 2tbsp of low fat Greek yoghurt and some toasted flakes almonds.
Very tasty.

TiredButDancing · 06/08/2021 11:23

I started a FD.... then fell head first into a packet of prawn crackers as needed to comfort eat. I'm actually not feeling great. I think my iron levels are still a problem so feel weak and tired a lot. Will probably take a week or two to sort.

Gong to try to be a bit more sensible rest of the day.

BaconAndAvocado · 06/08/2021 14:41

Don't worry TiredButDancing some days it just doesn't happen. In the grand scheme of things, it's just one day.

BaconAndAvocado · 07/08/2021 06:52

Blimey, I've lost 4lb this week, makes up for last week's gain!
Really pleased 😀

harriethoyle · 07/08/2021 11:37

Fabulous @BaconAndAvocado!

OP posts:
BaconAndAvocado · 07/08/2021 13:28

Thanks harriethoyle
It does seem a lot......hoping my scales aren't on the way out!

That said, I haven't lost in a while so maybe it was all banked up 😂

absolutelyknackeredcow · 09/08/2021 09:42

Well done @BaconAndAvocado .
I'm on a b2b today. Day 1
Bit of a indulgent weekend so aiming for three days this week and only one next week
