Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8 smile

Last thread was here
www.mumsnet.com/Talk/fasting_diet/4128689-5-2-Thread-94-Its-a-New-Year-a-New-Day-and-were-feeling-GOOD

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Just ready for my tea. I should make it until

absolutelyknackeredcow · 30/11/2021 18:36

Tomorrow

harriethoyle · 30/11/2021 22:22

Kitchen closed on 635 - I had fishfingers and baked beans for tea because I'm a proper grown up...!!

Crumpets for breakfast tomorrow. Can't wait!

OP posts:
EatYourFive · 01/12/2021 06:59

Kitchen closed at 496 yesterday, very pleased.
Well done you both, hopefully will see you here next week!

absolutelyknackeredcow · 01/12/2021 08:00

Yes @EatYourFive will be doing mon/ Tues next week
Slight loss this week but with totm I'm happy with that

harriethoyle · 01/12/2021 08:45

My crumpets this morning were deeeelicious!

I'm doing a third FD tomorrow with Mr Hoyle to get him back into the regime. I think I'm b2b Tues and Weds next week as we're decorating the tree monday and I like a glass of fizz with that! Travelling Friday night so might squeeze in a third then...

OP posts:
EatYourFive · 01/12/2021 09:23

@harriethoyle do you often do three fast days? Maybe that's something I should consider as well. I usually do well during the week but struggle at weekends, too many temptations like DH wanting to order takeaway or eating out or having too many glasses of wine. Last weekend was all my fault though as bought some chocolate. Chocolate and cheese (not together!Grin), just can't resist them!

harriethoyle · 01/12/2021 09:49

Not that often @EatYourFive it very much depends on what else I've got going on... and how overindulgent my weekend has been! That's why I like a b2b because I can squeeze a third in if necessary...

OP posts:
harriethoyle · 01/12/2021 09:49

And yes, wine is absolutely my weekend downfall!

OP posts:
EatYourFive · 01/12/2021 10:22

@harriethoyle Think I might take the same approach going forward. Not this week though, need to be mentally prepared! I just seem to do really well all week and then just throw all my hard work down the drain in the form of wine, chocolate and whatnot.

KobaniDaughters · 01/12/2021 21:34

Just checking in. I am NOT doing well failing fasts left right and centre and binge eating. Ugh. But you’re all still inspiring so I keep checking in

harriethoyle · 02/12/2021 07:57

@KobaniDaughters what can we do to help with that? Do you need cheerleaders? FD buddies? Help planning?

Anyone joining me on FD 3 today? Tina thin for lunch and fishcakes and stir fry for tea 🙌

OP posts:
Solderingon · 02/12/2021 19:41

@KobaniDaughters just one day at a time. You know you can do it, you've done it before. 💪

Just checking back in, I've been plugging away at the fast days. Got a bit frustrated as my weight went back up 2 weeks ago, since then it's come back down. I think it's just normal monthly fluctuations but I've only been doing this 6 weeks so it's difficult to see the patterns and not just panic that it's not working. However the overall pattern is gentle weight loss.

I'm still not being very good on NFD's, but life gets in the way! And I prefer it that way. I'm trying to be moderate in the week and relax (within reason) at the weekends. I've got a really fun weekend away planned from tomorrow so had a FD today to help balance it out.

harriethoyle · 02/12/2021 20:03

@Solderingon I take a really similar approach. Life is too bloody short to be virtuous every day and if I wanted to calorie count every day I'd do that rather than 5:2!

Kitchen closing here 557 for third FD of the week. Happy with that!

Tomorrow we have steak and chips and red wine for tea, and I CAN'T WAIT!

OP posts:
harriethoyle · 02/12/2021 20:03

Too many exclamation marks in that post...

!!! Grin

OP posts:
KobaniDaughters · 02/12/2021 20:27

Thanks for the support @harriethoyle and @Solderingon

My problem is end of day, I plan and I manage and then a fuck it button gets pressed. I’m going to track everything again because I did that yesterday and actually had a 1500 day because I didn’t snack after dinner so maybe that will be motivating because nothing else is right now!!!

harriethoyle · 02/12/2021 20:43

Can you not have snacks in the house @KobaniDaughters? Honestly, I have to take a zero tolerance approach because if they're in the house, I eat them Grin

OP posts:
KobaniDaughters · 02/12/2021 20:57

Unfortunately I live with a husband and two children - I snack on healthy stuff, like nuts and fruit, but still

harriethoyle · 03/12/2021 08:35

That's really tough. I guess at least you aren't poking down family sized dairy milks! (I really want dairy milk now).

Would intermittent fasting work for you? Eating window would mean any snacking in the evening would be off the table...

OP posts:
KobaniDaughters · 04/12/2021 01:40

Yeah that’s worked well in the past and is a natural window for me (minus mindless snacking) so might stuck to 16:8 for a bit and make my only tiles to eat when I’m hungry and don’t when I’m not!!!

absolutelyknackeredcow · 06/12/2021 08:18

Morning all
Horrid TOTM over so hoping for a good b2b
@harriethoyle @EatYourFive you with me?

harriethoyle · 06/12/2021 08:50

I'm having Christmas sherry whilst putting the trees up tonight so doing Tues-weds b2b this week @absolutelyknackeredcow - see you tomorrow!

OP posts:
EatYourFive · 06/12/2021 09:22

@absolutelyknackeredcow - yep I'm in!

absolutelyknackeredcow · 06/12/2021 11:57

Go team @EatYourFive

EatYourFive · 06/12/2021 12:51

How are you getting on @absolutelyknackeredcow? So far so good here, have had a couple of milky coffees and once again having a miso soup for lunch. Just love them when the weather is cold!

I am considering doing a third fast day on Thursday this week if I work from home. Might be a good idea to fit some extra days in before Christmas as have a feeling may not be able to fast that well when kids are off school..
