Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8 smile

Last thread was here
www.mumsnet.com/Talk/fasting_diet/4128689-5-2-Thread-94-Its-a-New-Year-a-New-Day-and-were-feeling-GOOD

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Thanks both. So no massive no no's on small snack such as a banana at lunch and then evening meal on NFD's?

KobaniDaughters · 27/10/2021 00:17

I think just make sure you’re getting enough calories in still

MazzleDazzle · 27/10/2021 07:18

Braved the scales this morning. I’ve gained 20lb in 6 months! And that’s after my b2b. Blush

KobaniDaughters · 27/10/2021 19:30

Oooof bloody pandemic has a lot to answer for! FD failed yesterday so it was just a 18:6 in the end

harriethoyle · 27/10/2021 22:00

@MazzleDazzle we get back tomorrow after a week all inclusive with the kids. I am DREADING the scales! We'll get them down together...

OP posts:
MazzleDazzle · 27/10/2021 23:18

That’s a plus Kobani! You’ll be safe from most of the temptation then. We had a visit from my lovely MIL today and she gave each of my children 20 full size chocolate bars/packets of sweets for Halloween. That’s 60 in total! Definitely the potential for an AIBU thread there… Hmm

Hope you’ve enjoyed your holiday harriet! Looking forward to smashing the numbers down with you.

Managed a decent NFD today: 2 meals and no snacks. I swear my face and tummy feel slimmer already. I’ve felt so bloated recently.

KobaniDaughters · 28/10/2021 03:32

Another 18:6 day in terms of food but not alcohol today! Will try for a FD thurs

MazzleDazzle · 29/10/2021 09:26

How did yesterday go Kobani?

Yesterday was my last working day of the week. I definitely had that Friday feeling and I so wanted to open a bottle of wine, but managed to resist.

I’m tentatively hoping for a FD today. Then I could relax a bit and fast again on Monday.

We’re going to see a firework display tomorrow and guising on Sunday, so a busy weekend to look forward too. So far I have resisted MIL’s ridiculous chocolate mountain!

harriethoyle · 29/10/2021 11:01

Drum roll please... 4kg put on in a week of all inclusive! 😂🙈 dear Lord!

So. Aiming for quick on, quick off - 16:8 today, and FD mon-tues of next week. Probably a mini on weds and Thurs.

Also I'm sick of losing and gaining the same 2kgs. So aiming for 70kg TW by Christmas. I know I can do it with a bit more non-FD focus. Keep me on track, fast buddies!

OP posts:
MazzleDazzle · 29/10/2021 19:17

Oh my, harriet! That is impressive. I’m sure it will be a case of quick on, quick off though. You’ve got this!

Delighted I managed to fast today. Went out for lunch with DD. Ordered a chicken salad with low cal dressing. Thankfully I’ve been busy ever since, and haven’t had anything else. Today is also my 6th day in a row without alcohol! I’ll celebrate with a hot black currant squash later. Grin

KobaniDaughters · 29/10/2021 19:43

Well done @MazzleDazzle (and @harriethoyle 😂)

Nope didn’t happen yesterday, I’m struggling to be motivated but did do another 16:8. I think I’m going to just do my best to to 18:6 for the next few days and kick off again next week

harriethoyle · 29/10/2021 19:55

Thanks @MazzleDazzle and @KobaniDaughtersI worked VERY hard!! 😂😂😂

OP posts:
Solderingon · 29/10/2021 20:25

@harriethoyle that is impressive!Grin hope you enjoyed it all.

Day 2 of a b2b finished at about 550cals. Already made tomorrow's overnight oats for breakfast. Also looking forward to a nice milky coffee.
I've somehow broken my scales so no idea how that's going.

harriethoyle · 29/10/2021 20:49

Over 300 different wines and I made a valiant attempt to sample as many as possible...! @Solderingon

Fallen off the wagon this week with the kids being off school, will have to get back to it next week

Beautiful3 · 29/10/2021 21:56

Snap @fudgecat, same here. Hoping to get back into it, next week when the kids are back in school.

MazzleDazzle · 30/10/2021 10:42

Well done soldieringon!

Holidays are worth falling off the wagon for @fudgecat. You’re doing well at 16:8.

I hoped to knuckle down when the kids were off school, but I drank lots of wine instead! Grin It’s much easier to knuckle down once they’re back at school. Mine went back last Monday.

After Mon/Tues b2b and Thurs FD I’m 204 lb. I dread to think what I weighed at the start of the week. Blush I have a weekend away in 3 weeks time. I’m aiming to be 195lb by then, and 187lb by Christmas.

Then 2022 is going to be the year I finally get back down to target!

Enjoy the rest of your weekend everyone.

harriethoyle · 31/10/2021 18:17

Who's with me tomorrow? I'm doing day 1 of a b2b... home tonight from holidays to bare cupboards! So apples for lunch and then a supermarket trip after work.

I've also signed up to 3 months on the Jillian Michaels app - loads of great workouts which don't need any special equipment. I did 30 day shred a few years ago and it was so effective! So I thought I'd give some new programmes a whirl. Looking at slim 60 which is a two month programme designed to blast away stubborn areas... I'll report back! First workout scheduled for tomorrow morning...

MazzleDazzle · 31/10/2021 23:10

I’m doing a b2b tomorrow too harriet.

heregoes74 · 01/11/2021 08:28

Morning All,

Re-joining the thread (if that's okay) I tried to fast again over the summer but with an imminent house move it was always doomed to fail Shock

Moved last week, so things are settling down, its time to restart this as I am the heaviest I've ever been Sad planning to fast tomorrow and friday this week. Wish me luck.... hope everyone has a good day Smile

absolutelyknackeredcow · 01/11/2021 09:23

Waves to everyone and welcome back @heregoes74 !
So went on hols for half term and got terrible food poisoning. Was truly horrendous but on the up side my November health kick and weight loss plan got off to a turbo boosted start.😂
I'm sort of doing an 800 cal today. My body struggled eating normally yesterday so I think it's best I eat gently today. I'm also not drinking until the 25th nov so that will help. Also doing Friday

fudgecat · 01/11/2021 10:47

Right. Kids are back in school and I'm determined to make a proper go of it. FD's today and Thursday this week

MazzleDazzle · 01/11/2021 10:52

Every cloud @absolutelyknackeredcow!

Welcome back @heregoes74. I’m in the same situation as you, but one week back.

Didn’t have a good sleep last night and an earlier than usual start this morning, so I wasn’t feeling any enthusiasm at all for a FD!

I’ve made it this far though.

Good luck everyone. We can do this!

harriethoyle · 01/11/2021 13:23

Lolol @absolutelyknackeredcow it's an ill wind that blows no good!

How are you getting on @MazzleDazzle and @fudgecat? I am freaking starving and the wizened apples which are today's lunch have not proved up to the task..!! Going to the supermarket on the way home from work to get good things to eat for the next few FD including a batch cooking session tomorrow night. Will either be fishcakes and veg or a ready meal for tonight. Luckily I'm quite busy today so should last until I get home...

OP posts:
Solderingon · 01/11/2021 13:32

Also doing day 1 of a b2b today! Good luck to everyone else ignoring their cupboards today too @harriethoyle @MazzleDazzle @fudgecat

So far so good. Have been and done the food shop so no sad apples here. Currently using baby naptime to procrastinate on my to do list. No good will come of this. Really need to take down the Halloween decorations and sort the washing. It's just not very tempting!
