Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8 smile

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

When I sat down in the car to collect my children, my jeans completely ripped from the crotch to a buttock! They didn't feel tight, if anything very comfortable after 6 fasts these past 2 weeks. Feeling mortified! Looking for new jeans online right now! Blush

I think I've sabotaged my efforts last night and today. I think I'm
Probably still in TdEE but portions have probably been a bit big. Need to reign it in as I don't feel as good, bloated and just a bit yuck. It's amazing how good you feel when you actually listen to your true hunger pangs. Also not drank as much water so that's not helping.

Would like to start losing though but have come to conclusion that to do that I will have to really cut back on my NFD

Hi, just started 5:2 today, I'm trying to shift 5kg of lockdown lard. I've done 5:2 a good few years ago and found it quite successful.

Not too bad thanks, baked Mediterranean veg and pitta bread for dinner which was nice so roughly around the 500 mark, just need to keep away from the kitchen now!

I went to the gym today and my appetite has been through the roof! I've also got a cough thing going on (tested negative on pcr) and I'm not sure if that's contributing. Seems to have been a carb heavy day Sad

Definitely feel like I need a FD to get me back on track!

I feel rubbish. Tired and sore. Was up with the kids overnight Sad not sure if I should postpone today's FD but I'll struggle to get it in otherwise.

Will see how I go. Plenty of water this AM

But I'm going to crack on. Like you, it's today or never and I've a busy weekend of socialising so I don't want to have to limit that because I wavered today...

Thanks @needtogetfit21 had a bit of a blow out at the weekend and yesterday, as it was my daughters birthday 🎂🥳 All that cake, Ben and jerrys and kettle crisps!!! Back to fasting today. Hidden the left over chocolate cake in the garage. New jeans on order!

Had a nap and feel slightly better. Will glug some water till 4pm then have my 500 cals. Thinking egg based

The real test will be this evening as once the kids are asleep I often struggle with carrying out the FD Sad but I shall post on here and get to bed early.

How's it going @Beautiful3 and @harriethoyle ? I think I need to brush my teeth coz I have that horrible dry taste. Need to keep drinking water too, maybe not drank as much as I usually do but still had 1.5litres

Just got my eldest to put to bed and then I'm going to watch casualty, maybe with a camomile tea Grin early to bed

Well done @needtogetfit2. I didn't eat all day yesterday, as I like to save my calories for dinner. I thought I'd ruined the fast with some left over party food. Turns out, after I added it up today (I saved my dinner for today) it was actually okay (calorie wise). Yesterday ended up being 665 and today is 599. Going to do another one Thursday too.

Ooh looks like some excellent fasts here. I've been away for three nights for work and it was very boozy.
On a fast day today - only one I can fit in this week. So hopefully will fix some of the damage
