Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8 smile

Last thread was here
www.mumsnet.com/Talk/fasting_diet/4128689-5-2-Thread-94-Its-a-New-Year-a-New-Day-and-were-feeling-GOOD

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

absolutelyknackeredcow · 14/09/2021 22:30

Well done @needtogetfit21 . Tomorrow is another day and you can eat

absolutelyknackeredcow · 15/09/2021 08:37

Good drop today - loss of 2.5 lbs. Not quite at pre holiday levels but close
Who is fasting today ?

needtogetfit21 · 15/09/2021 17:14

@absolutelyknackeredcow I closed the kitchen yesterday and dh pitched up with a chippie! He hadn't been around for a few days due to work so think he was trying to make it up to me.

It meant I finished yesterday at approx 1660 cals yesterday (if my fish supper was approx 900 cals according to MyFitnessPal)

So FD today. Nailed it at 500cals. Got a headache now though so will take painkillers and crack on , get through the evening and early to bed..

needtogetfit21 · 16/09/2021 08:41

I survived the night and have nailed 2 FD's this week Grin totm has arrived too

BaconAndAvocado · 16/09/2021 09:01

Hello my longlost Fasting Friends!

I'm still getting about 5 hours of sleep a night due to our new puppy and his nocturnal ways!
I'm hoping to return to FDs soon or when I get a bit more sleep.

absolutelyknackeredcow well done in your 2.5lb loss 👊🏻

needtogetfit21
I've also suffered with headaches when fasting. For me, drinking about 2litres of water every day really helped.
I also think it's cold turkey from lack of sugar, something my body is definitely addicted to.

Have a great day all, FD or not.
I've been trying to just eat healthily whilst I'm basically on a very sedentary lockdown until puppy gets his next vaccinations and I can go out.
Last week I maintained which I was really pleased with and I'm doing a Zoom job it's my PT once a week as well as running round the garden like a loon with pup 🐶

TiredButDancing · 16/09/2021 11:24

For those of you who exercise while on a FD, how does that work out? I am going to do day 1 of C25K tomorrow but also planning a fasting dy. Am I going to massively struggle?

needtogetfit21 · 19/09/2021 22:44

V quiet here! I really miss BCF, anyone know how she is doing?

So my first week of fasting went well. I lost 3lbs if I take my first weight and lowest recorded weight (but it's creeped up a little due to nfd's since, obviously). This is great news but I feel SO deflated when I realise how long it's going to take me to get to goal Sad

Any tips?

Some stats:
Height - 5"2
TDEE - 1550
Starting weight - 10st 6.8lbs
Goal weight - under 9 stone

The most I can lose a week is two thirds of a lb, given how low my tdee is.

I also have underlying health issues which make it difficult to be consistent/ stay motivated

Beautiful3 · 20/09/2021 07:00

Hi everybody, last week I managed to do 3 fast days. Monday 428, Wednesday 578 and Friday 443. Hoping to do the same today and the rest of week. I used to do back to backs but don't think I could do that right now.

harriethoyle · 20/09/2021 08:12

Hi all, back from holiday knackered, tanned and all inclusive brunched to DEATH Grin Have put on c.4kg which I can cope with... easing back into weekday sobriety today then b2bs Tues and Weds and some c25k action. Off to catch up on the thread and all the losses in my absence!

absolutelyknackeredcow · 20/09/2021 08:44

Welcome back @harriethoyle !!!!
Sounds like an amazing holiday and I'm very jealous about brunch! My fav meal.
I'm on a b2b today

BaconAndAvocado · 20/09/2021 09:19

I’m also jealous harriethoyle 😁hope you had a marvellous time.

I’m going to attempt 2 FDs this week, probably Tuesday and Friday.
I’m still getting very little sleep due to our new puppy but I’m strangely getting used to it!

Been doing one PT and one HIIT session a week, want to add another HIIT, puppy allowing!

absolutelyknackeredcow · 20/09/2021 09:47

Well done @harriethoyle with the exercise
I'm going to try an extra work out on Friday as I'm still feeling very lardy Grin

harriethoyle · 20/09/2021 09:52

Well @absolutelyknackeredcow I haven't actually done any yet...! But I did get a treadmill session in at our first hotel which was, frankly, a minor miracle...

How is puppy getting on @BaconAndAvocado? Settling nicely? All photos welcome!

BaconAndAvocado · 20/09/2021 12:47

harriethoyle Newboy is settling in well. I’ve never had a dog before, it’s hard work!
The sleepless nights and being tied to the house!
But he is very very gorgeous and we feel lucky to have him.
I will post a photo later 🐶

TiredButDancing · 20/09/2021 13:36

I have to admit ladies that I'm not sure this is working for me. I can see and feel the benefit but the second FD never seems to work out. And Iw as supposed to do one today but just woke up ravenous.

I'm wondering about trying to apply some of the lessons for a lower calorie approach over all. eg, I had a normal breakfast today but I'm going to have the lunch I'd have had if I was fasting - which is just under 100 calories. I've also often thought that I should try harder to have my FD breakfast on a non-FD. I really really need to get on top of the weight thing, but a eating programme that works but that I am not doing is counter productive! Grin I am in awe of the rest of you.

How many weeks is that you have been doing it?
TiredButDancing · 20/09/2021 15:03

The problem is that I've been trying off and on for a few months now. It clearly works as a diet - that's not th problem. The problem is that there's always some reason why I can't do a FD when I'm supposed to. It's very frustrating.
