Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Hello, FD for me too !!
Had weight check this morning before starting my FD..and am gutted to see its gone up..was it due to eating way over TDEE over the weekend or hormonal or being physically active with diy project last few days? No idea 😥 or perhaps this is normal ? Do you weigh before fasting at the start of the week ? Weekend fest should stop I guess 😂

@witchone1 I am inevitably "up" on a Monday morning after the weekend, pretty sure in my case it's linked to wine! ;-) I wouldn't stress about it too much. Quick on, quick off.

I hope so @harriethoyle 🤞 ...my hunger is at another level since morning as well. Planning for 1boiled egg salad for lunch, fish ,rice , watermelon for dinner. Realised watermelon is not just water....quite a bit of calories there 😂😂

I'm doing remote training today, which consists of watching videos and so I'm not busy at all... which makes it far harder!

FD for me today. Was busy at work, so didn’t get a chance to feel hungry during the day.

For dinner I made chicken fricassé and half a pouch of rice. Filling and really tasty.

Didn’t manage a workout and my step count is pitiful, but I’ll make up for it tomorrow.

Finishing at 550. Had vegetarian meal lunch and dinner for a change... definitely helps keeping calorie low. Doing another FD tomorrow.
@MazDazzle, amazing you can workout on FDs 👍 , what do you do usually?
@ListeningQuietly @harriethoyle, hope it went well.
BTW, is 600 cal day still counted as FD or mini FD needing another day to compensate?

About to have tomato soup for dinner (something comforting) and that will take me to 396, so I may have a yoghurt and berries afterwards.

Fasting has been ok today, I haven't felt like eating much and work was very busy. Hope everyone else has had a good fasting day.

I’ve always worked out on FDs - HIIT & kettlebells mostly. I don’t notice a difference in my performance, if anything I’m sharper and quicker.

I have leftovers from last night’s FD, so I won’t have to cook today.

It is miserable here. It’s been raining all night.

Day 2 b2b ..feeling bit drained after day1. Already making meal plans for tomorrow😁...but will count calorie on NFD too, to not go over TDEE unlike last week.

yesterday was a piece of fruit for lunch and a salad for supper
today is a banana for lunch and baked camembert and salad for supper
with swims in the morning

Done for today at 557. Last meal was at 6pm. Hubby ordered takeaway that I managed to keep aside till tomorrow but I'm soooooo hungry right now. How to manage night hunger ??

That’s some will power putting a takeaway aside til the next day! Well done. My DH asked if I wanted anything back from the bakery today! Hmm

That’s a really good idea to work out an average over the two days harriet. Yesterday I was 450 and today was 750, which kind of felt more like a mini, but that gives an average of 600 which I’m pleased with.

Well done to all of the other fasters!

Just place marking - have eaten a much more normal amount the last few days and feel better for it, yesterday was probably a mini fast actually and my family totally forgot about me so I ended up having a banana for lunch!!

That's the best thing about b2b @MazDazzle - 1300 to play with!

Although I am FURIOUS this morning because scales show me as being 1kg up from yesterday!! Angry if it's not a blip I'll fast on Thursday to give myself a boost. Vexing though!
