Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8 smile

Last thread was here
www.mumsnet.com/Talk/fasting_diet/4128689-5-2-Thread-94-Its-a-New-Year-a-New-Day-and-were-feeling-GOOD

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Kitchen closing on 786 so 1394 for my b2b... a bit high but not catastrophic. Looking forward to the last hcb for breakfast tomorrow Grin

KobaniDaughters · 08/04/2021 03:00

Closing the kitchen on 573. Was def a good idea to have a big meal an hour before PT, at around 3:30. It’s 7pm now and I’ll prob be hungry before bed but have a meeting and then will get an early night

Tiredandbored · 08/04/2021 12:49

Just had a delicious lunch of salmon with soy and ginger with courgette and broccoli! Am trying to go lower carb so ensuring I have carbs with a max of one meal a day. This is my attempt at increasing protein instead and it was delicious!!

FD tomorrow though, so won't be such an exciting lunch then unfortunately!

ListeningQuietly · 08/04/2021 19:59

NFD here
sitting at my desk all day
sandwich for lunch
spag bol (with LOADS of hidden veg) for supper

FD today, anyone else?

MazDazzle · 09/04/2021 09:24

Good luck on your FD Tired! I’m fasting tomorrow.

I’m back to work on Monday after 2 weeks holiday. Most of the time it’s been cold, windy and chucking it down with rain. Kids have been miserable and DH’s been away the whole time. I feel like Julia from Motherland!

The kids are keen to do some baking today (which will involve arguing over whose turn it is to stir and complaining because their sibling got to pour in the flour and the sugar, which isn’t fair) so def. not the best day for a FD!

I’m 4.5lb down since the last time I measured myself, which feels like nothing as it’s came off at a snail’s pace. However, it equates to a combined 10cm off from thighs, arms, hips and waist.

It’s so easy to feel disheartened when you base your success purely on the scales. Get Your tape measures out!

KobaniDaughters · 09/04/2021 15:27

Excellent post and NSV @MazDazzle

I’m with you @Tiredandbored

Tiredandbored · 09/04/2021 19:47

Didn't think this through very well...

Had my FD all set out with berries and Greek yoghurt planned for lunch and an omelette for dinner, but we decided to let the kids have a 'yes day' as a bit of fun before they go back to school.

Of course they decided to change the dinner menu, so we ended up having chicken goujons and chips...

However, I did manage to stick to my calorie count as I didn't take any chips and just had a couple of goujons, so all is not lost!!

Finished on 619 calories and the kids had a great day.

I hope you got on well today @KobaniDaughters

ListeningQuietly · 09/04/2021 19:57

Maz
Tape measure is a HUGE part of it.
My waist is way up because I've not been swimming which tones me and shrinks the flab
without losing an ounce
hence why NSV matters so much

KobaniDaughters · 09/04/2021 22:53

I would count that a def success @Tiredandbored I would have given in and snaffled the chips too

Going ok so far here. It’s 3pm and I’ve just had 35kcals of coffee creamer. Am going to be having a bit of a leftovers early dinner prob around 4/4:30 but high protein so should keep me nice and full

KobaniDaughters · 10/04/2021 02:22

Closing the kitchen on 580, which I need to do even though it’s only 6:20pm because I’m on my period and in the first day or two I have to be very strict otherwise I get such awful bloated abdominal pain but I seek comfort in food when hormonal so a FD today will hopefully help. Making a peppermint tea now

Tiredandbored · 10/04/2021 07:26

Well done @KobaniDaughters, that's a great FD!

MazDazzle · 10/04/2021 16:53

Well done Kobani.

I think you did remarkably well given the circumstances, Tired. I couldn’t resist pinching a few chips from my kids today. The local butcher has opened a beach hut selling takeaways, including crepes. I might have to reconsider our weekend walking route!

Hopefully it’s not too long til the swimming pools open ListeningQuietly. I really miss the gym. It’s just not the same working out in my cluttered house!

FD here (aside from the pinched chips!) and I am FREEZING. Can’t remember the last time I felt this cold. Im sitting here with my DD’s oodie on Grin.

MazDazzle · 10/04/2021 21:09

Kitchen closed. Had bolognaise with asparagus and rocket for dinner and an apple.

It’s been a tough one as I just want to eat white toast and biscuits. The apple took me over 500 but it was sweet and crunchy and a good substitute!

Really tired, so hopefully I’ll get the kids bedded so I can have an early night. It’s a sorry state of affairs when they want to stay up later than me!

MazDazzle · 11/04/2021 13:32

3.5lbs down this week!

Two weeks of getting up early and getting a work out in before the kids get up has paid off.

ListeningQuietly · 11/04/2021 14:10

Gyms open tomorrow.
Shops open tomorrow.
Pub gardens open tomorrow.
Half the schools are back tomorrow.
And I potted up my tomato seedlings this morning.
Summer will come.

Talk some sense into me. I’m having hip surgery on Tuesday and freaking out about piling on the weight, but I should lay off fasting for at least this week shouldn’t I really?

ListeningQuietly · 11/04/2021 15:45

Hi Kobani
How do you feel ?
Do you feel like fasting ?
And once you have had the surgery, you'll feel pretty rough for a few days so a diet of small really healthy portions will be easy
and then when you are recovering, its about burning the calories through posture and doing your physio
so that when you are better you can run around like a mad thing

OP posts:
Lilice · 11/04/2021 20:54

How that's amazing @MazDazzle well done 👏👏👏

Good luck with your surgery @KobaniDaughters I have no idea about the fasting. Maybe your surgeon would know?

I haven't weighed myself for a while now but I can tell my clothes are looser. I even bought a new pair of Jean's one size smaller.

Enjoy the gym tomorrow @ListeningQuietly

MazDazzle · 11/04/2021 23:05

All of my kids are back at school tomorrow and I’m back at work. My eldest has been home since before Christmas. Hoping for a stress free morning tomorrow.

Still a while to wait before the gyms and shops are open here though, but we’ll get there.

DH has been away working for 3 weeks, but he’s due home tomorrow. Freedom!

Look after yourself Kobani.

ginsparkles · 12/04/2021 07:02

Just checking in and sending you all a wave. Have been lurking around, not posting, not fasting but keeping up with what you are all up to.

Funeral tomorrow so am taking this week without fasts, and being kind to myself. Haven't weighed and as the law of sod would have it, it's the TOM. Brilliant!!

Plan is to give myself this week to be miserable and then next week, DD back to school, me back to work and back to 4:3, regain control.

Well done @MazDazzle on your loss and everyone else whose lost and had brilliant fast days. I will be back.

harriethoyle · 12/04/2021 11:13

Love and good luck for the forthcoming week to @ginsparkles and @KobaniDaughters

I'm doing my usual b2b. Freaking starving already! I'm feeling very hangry which doesn't bode well for my work colleagues...!

Tuna sandwich for lunch and chilli con carne on broc for tea. Should come in c.580 cals 🤞

MazDazzle · 12/04/2021 17:24

Take care of yourself gin. Hope all goes well tomorrow. Sounds like you’re doing the right thing taking a break from fasting for now.

Good luck Harriet!

I was so sleepy and cold at work today! Spent most of the day at my desk with my coat on. Not long finished dinner (I couldn’t hold out any longer!), which was Thai curry and an apple. Kitchen closed on 533 cals.

I’ve promised the kids crepes with strawberries and Nutella for dessert. On a FD? What was I thinking? Will try to stay strong. Smile

Humphriescushion · 12/04/2021 17:27
